Redskins Practice Squad Prediction after week 3 of camp

Redskins Personnel Washington Commanders Washington Redskins

Based off of the Offense and Defense 53 man roster predictions here are the 10 players I think that the Redskins will look to keep on their practice squad:

53 Man roster Offensive predictions | 53 Man roster Defensive predictions | Practice Squad Predictions

QB Kevin Hogan:

– The Redskins are going to want three quarterbacks with the team between the 53 man roster and the practice squad. After Hogan’s 1st preseason game, it’s unlikely that he will do enough to make the final roster, but he’s still practice squad eligible. Hogan should spend the year as the Redskins 3rd QB and scout team quarterback in practice. Hogan has some NFL experience so perhaps another team would claim him if they want three QBs on their 53 man roster, but that seems unlikely at this time.

RB Martez Carter:

– Carter had a very productive career at Grambling and projects to be a 3rd down type of back at the NFL level. He’s clearly behind Thompson, Marshall and Bibbs so his chance at a roster spot is pretty small even with the injury to Derrius Guice. Carter though could find his way on to the practice squad though if the Redskins only keep 4 running backs. He’s got some decent ability out of the backfield and is a quick back who can make people miss. He could be considered a longer term back-up option to Chris Thompson going forward if he develops.

WR Cam Sims:

– Cam Sims had under 500 career receiving yards in four years at Alabama, but he’s making up for his lack of opportunities in college with an impressive rookie camp. Outside of Danny Johnson no UDFA has been as impressive as Sims, and he showed well in his first preseason game with a couple nice catches including a deep ball down the sideline. He measures in at six feet and three and a half inches (listed at 6’5″, but his pro day results were shorter), and he shows decent speed and quickness. With Robert Davis’ injury he’s got a shot to make the team, but he’s probably more likely to be tagged for the practice squad.

TE Matt Flanagan:

– Definitely not the biggest name in consideration for the practice squad, but I think his chances might be improving. The Redskins are likely to only keep 3 tight ends and no full backs on the 53 man roster and with the Redskins cutting the FB that they had in camp, they are running short of guys who can block. Flanagan is not going to wow anyone with his pass catching ability, but he can be an effective in line blocking TE. With no full back on the roster the Redskins will need their TEs to help in the short yardage situations in that role as well. Flanagan gives the Redskins a fall back option if they feel they need better blocking help on the 53 man roster as the season goes on.

OL Kyle Kalis:

– Kalis is fighting with Tyler Catalina and TJ Clemmings for the final roster spot on the 53 man roster, but I think he’s likely behind the other two at this point. He’s still practice squad eligible and the Redskins would likely try to stash him again this year. It’s possible he gets claimed or if he makes it to the practice squad he is signed off of it like he was a year ago. Until another team grabs him though he offers solid interior offensive line depth for the Redskins.

OL Timon Parris:

– Parris was considered an intriguing late round Offensive lineman (primarily an OT) prospect out of Stoney Brook. Coming from a small school, Parris was going to need a year to improve his technique and footwork. That makes him a tough guy to keep on the 53 man roster, but definitely the type of player you want to try to stash on the practice squad. The Redskins have a couple other OL in the mix for practice squad jobs, but Parris has probably the highest ceiling of the group.

DL Ondre Pipkins:

– There is a chance the Redskins decide to break camp with seven defensive linemen instead of the six that I expect. If that is the case Pipkins could be in a battle with Phil Taylor for that seventh spot. Overall though he seems more likely to earn a practice squad spot instead, where he can continue to offer depth at both the NT and DE positions. Pipkins will have an opportunity the next few weeks to change some minds though as both Daron Payne and Matt Ioannidis are out or limited with injury.

LB Pete Robertson:

– Definitely still in the mix for the 9th or 10th (if they keep that many) linebacker spot, Robertson feels like he’s a bit behind and more likely to be a practice squad target. He’s gotten some good buzz in training camp, but his first preseason game of the year was pretty uneventful. Robertson has some versatility and special teams ability so he could get called up if any outside or inside linebacker goes down with injury.

CB Ranthony Texada:

– Texada wasn’t highly rated in draft circles and was clearly a long shot to make the team, but he has impressed the Redskins some. In talking about young corners in camp after the release of Orlando Scandrick, Coach Gruden mentioned Texada as someone who had impressed the team. While still not really in the mix for a 53 man roster spot, it definitely puts him in the mix for a practice squad spot. Texada will need some better preseason performances as he you could see a big gap between him and fellow UDFA Danny Johnson in the first game.

S Fish Smithson:

-On last weeks prediction I had the Redskins stashing both Quin Blanding and Smithson on the practice squad, but with the Redskins keeping a 5th safety this time I only think they keep one on the PS. Smithson is more advanced than Blanding at this point and I think he’d be the option here for the Redskins if another team doesn’t claim him on waivers. The Redskins are high on him and down the road he could develop into a quality back-up/special teamer.
