Quarterbacks: 2 – Alex Smith, Colt McCoy

-This isn’t going to change, though the fact that Colt McCoy is a little banged up, could potentially force the Redskins to keep three QBs on the 53 man roster to start the year. I don’t think that will be the Redskins first choice and with the extra time between cut down day and the first game, they could opt to cut Kevin Hogan and then bring him back from the practice squad right before the first game if needed. One positive note here is that Hogan did have a strong performance in the 3rd preseason game and showed a little bit of why he was able to be semi functional in the NFL the past two years. He’s still well behind McCoy and unlikely to make the team outside of an injury, but it was a nice positive to see.

Running backs: 5 – Adrian Peterson, Chris Thompson, Samaje Perine, Rob Kelley, Kapri Bibbs

-I don’t think keeping 5 running backs was the Redskins initial plan, but I think it’s looking more and more likely. With Peterson just getting going in this offense and not really an every down/formation back, he limits how much the Redskins can rely on him. Chris Thompson is recovering from an injury and not only can’t be counted on for as big of a role this season, but the Redskins are likely to opt to keep a dedicated back-up. Perine is coming back from injury as well and while he should be healthy for week 1, maybe he’s a guy you make inactive to start the year. Rob Kelley remains a coaching favorite and as one of the few fully healthy backs on the team he will be tough to cut as well. This means the Redskins will need to not keep a guy at another position, but I think they have to ensure they can have a functional running back committee.

Wide Receivers: 6 – Josh Doctson, Jamison Crowder, Paul Richardson, Maurice Harris, Trey Quinn, Cam Sims

-Still some questions here among the bottom three and it doesn’t help that there are so many injury concerns among the bottom of this receiver group. Harris would ideally be the fourth receiver, but he’s been dealing with an ankle and concussion injury. Brian Quick, who I think the team would have liked to kept, has been banged up all camp/preseason and barely been on the field. Cam Sims the impressive UDFA has been dealing with an injury the past week. In the end if all three of those guys, plus 7th rd rookie Trey Quinn are healthy I think it comes down to Quick vs Sims. Quick has a lot of things in his favor, experience, talent, route-running, versatility, but he’s not been on the field enough to guarantee him a spot. I think what it will boil down to is if the Redskins feel that they can stash Sims on the practice squad or not this season. If they feel they can get him through, then they could opt to go with Quick, if not I think they like his upside enough to carry him as basically a red-shirt roster spot all season. While Sims has showed up some in the preseason, it’s unlikely he’d be able to contribute at all if there were any injuries in front of him.

Tight Ends: 3 – Jordan Reed, Vernon Davis, Jeremy Sprinkle

-No changes here, this position group is set. It will be interesting to see if the Redskins scour the waiver wire for a 4th TE who can handle a hybrid H-Back/FB role as well as the traditional TE roles. They have tried some of the camp guys in that role, and it becomes more of a factor with Adrian Peterson on the roster, but I don’t think there is anyone currently on the team that would earn a spot in that role. Perhaps they look for Sprinkle to be utilized in that role this year as well.

Offensive Line: 9 – Trent Williams, Shawn Lauvao, Chase Roullier, Brandon Scherff, Morgan Moses, Ty Neskhe, Geron Christian, Tony Bergstrom, Kyle Kalis*

-No changes from last week, but I did add an asterisk to Kyle Kalis’ name. Not only could he lose out the final spot to a player like Tyler Catalina, but I really think the Redskins could look outside the organization to fill out the interior depth of the team. The back-up offensive line has been woefully poor in the preseason and are one of the Redskins biggest issues going forward. While it’s possible they are content with just Neskhe and Berstrom as the only guys they can semi count on (even Bergstrom has struggled a good bit), they could look for outside reinforcements. With some extra late round picks for next season, the Redskins may even look to trade for someone at the bottom of another team’s depth chart.
