2017 Senior Bowl offers Redskins plenty of options for the draft

Here is a look at some options who might be under consideration for the Redskins draft picks, using guys ranked by the latest CBS Big Board . While some of these players definitely could go earlier or later than this range, this gives a decent barometer of where these players are ranked-

1st Round options- pick 17: TE O.J. Howard, G Forrest Lamp, G Dan Feeney, LB Haason Reddick

-Howard would represent a luxury pick to be sure, but he could give the Redskins a major weapon if they lose both DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon in free agency. Overall it’s unlikely that he’s on the board here which means the Redskins would have to consider one of Lamp, Feeney or Reddick. Reddick showcased this week that he’s got the ability to play all over the field and he would be my selection here as he could be an inside linebacker in the Redskins 3-4 defense and one who can double as a pass rusher as well. Feeney who I love would make a lot of sense here as well as he could be a plug and play starter at LG and bolster an already talented OL. Lamp offers similar upside though I’m not as high on him for this spot.

2nd Round options- pick 49: DL Carlos Watkins, CB/S Cameron Sutton, DL Chris Wormley, G/T Taylor Moton, S Obi Melifonwu, DL Dalvin Tomlinson

-A lot of good options here but for me I think I’d grab S Obi Melifonwu if he’s available. He’s a big safety with a ton of range, and the ability to match-up man to man vs big physical TEs and WRs. That is a weapon to have on your defense and something the Redskins have lacked since the days of Sean Taylor. Wormley would be my second choice as I think he is a great fit as a 3-4 5 technique and could start right away for us. The other DL are options as well, and Cameron Sutton as a corner/safety is intriguing. I also like Moton who could move inside to LG as a long term option there.

3rd Round options- pick 81: CB Rasul Douglas, LB Alex Anzalone, DL Larry Ogunjobi, WR Zay Jones, LB Duke Riley, S Justin Evans, DL Jaleel Johnson, DL Montravious Adams

-If he’s healthy and you didn’t select an ILB earlier I could make a strong case for Alex Anzalone as he really showed his ability to cover and play in space. The safer option would be to grab a defensive lineman like Johnson or Adams if either is still on the board. Both have a lot of upside, but both are incomplete players as well. Adams is probably a better fit for the defense, but Johnson is a better technician. If they go receiver here in an effort to help replace the veterans, Zay Jones had a really nice week and could be an intriguing guy at the next level.

4th Round options- picks 112 & 122: WR Taywan Taylor, RB Kareem Hunt, DL Tanoh Kpassagon, DL Ryan Glasgow, EDGE Derek Rivers, LB Connor Harris,  QB Nate Peterman, CB Marquez White, DL Tanzel Smart, WR Josh Reynolds

-With two picks here the Redskins could add a pair of talented contributors. My favorite two players from this group are Taywan Taylor and Derek Rivers (though it wouldn’t be shocking to either go a round earlier). From an upside standpoint Kpassagon is very intriguing as he has a body type similar to Calais Campbell, but he’s no where near as refined. Glasgow is a safe pick and a guy who can help a lot in run support, but he doesn’t offer much as a pass rusher. Peterman will likely be drafted higher due to the need for QBs in the league, but there is value in taking him here even if Cousins is re-signed long term. Josh Reynolds would give the Redskins a bigger receiver with a large catch radius.

5th Round options- pick 155: WR Ryan Switzer, S John Johnson, DL Eddie Vanderdoes, TE Michael Roberts, RB Jamaal Williams, EDGE Dawaune Smoot, EDGE Tyus Bowser, S Jordan Sterns

-I believe both Ryan Switzer and Vanderdoes go at least a round higher in this draft, but if either are sitting there I’d take them pretty easily. John Johnson is probably a more likely target and he’d be my selection here assuming Switzer and Vanderdoes are off the board. Johnson shows range and coverage ability and is a willing run defender. I think he’s a free safety at the next level who can develop into a starter in a year or two. Roberts and Williams are also intriguing values to bolster those positions.

6th Round options- picks 202 & 210: RB De’Veon Smith, TE Jonnu Smith, TE Eric Saubert, WR Travin Dural, K Jake Elliott, WR Fred Ross

-Not a ton of the board here that I love (actually I like more players in the 7th round group so they would likely be options for me), but if you haven’t addressed RB or TE there are some solid players here. Dural and Ross aren’t going to do much early in their careers to help replace guys like D-Jax and Garcon, but maybe they help push a Ryan Grant off the roster. While some will hate it, taking a kicker here like Jake Elliott (or Zane Gonzalez if he’s available) isn’t the worst idea. Hopkins job shouldn’t be safe after he struggled this year and cost the Redskins dearly in some games.

7th Round options- pick 238: QB Josh Dobbs, LB Harvey Langi, G Kyle Kalis, LB Ben Gedeon, DL Issac Rochell, LB Ben Boulware, S Nate Gerry

-I’d be shocked if Dobbs lasts to the 7th, but if so he would be a good guy to have in camp. Dobbs flashes some decent abilities and he’s probably going to be the smartest guy in any room he’s in so taking a late round shot at him isn’t a terrible idea even if you don’t need a QB. Michigan guys Kyle Kalis and Ben Gedeon are both solid depth players for me, not sure if they will ever be starters, but could be nice special teams additions. The same holds true for Boulware and Gerry who both have a little skill, but will likely need to be role players at best at the next level. Rochell had a solid but unspectacular week down here. Still he’s got nice size and would fit the 5 tech role pretty easily.
