Washington Redskins Rookie Report: Preseason Game Week 2

1st  DL Daron Payne:

-Payne got his first preseason action Thursday night and he quickly showed why the Redskins took him as high as they did. He had a sack on the Jets opening drive, and got some penetration on a couple other snaps. It was just a brief showing for the first round rookie, but the upside and talent was very apparent. When Matt Ioannidis comes back healthy, the Redskins starting defensive line trio, is going to be a force for opposing offenses to contend with.

3rd OT Geron Christian:

-Christian got the start again at LT with Trent Williams sitting out, and played a fair amount with fellow tackles Ty Nsekhe and T.J. Clemmings also missing the game. Overall I thought Christian played better than his first game versus the Patriots, but it was still a pretty poor performance for the 3rd round rookie. He’s just a very raw prospect and rarely do you see him outright “win” a rep. Both of his run and pass blocking are an issue at this point and it’s pretty clear he’s not ready to contribute if the Redskins have some injury concerns at tackle again this year.

4th S Troy Apke:

-Apke had a really good game with three tackles, a pass defensed and an interception off a tipped pass. Apke was in with the 2nd unit so he played versus some of the Jets starters and looked good overall. His speed and athleticism was very apparent throughout his time in the game. Apke definitely needs some time to develop, but he’s showing a lot of future potential and at the very least could be a solid back-up/core special teamer.

5th DL Tim Settle:

-Settle had another really solid game this week. He only shows up on the stat sheet with one assisted tackle and one pass defensed, but he showed up on the field beyond that. You could see him on a couple runs clogging up the lane and forcing the back into a bad run. Versus the pass he didn’t show as much this week, but he was solid all-around. Settle is making a strong case to be the first defensive lineman off the bench and he should see plenty of reps the next few weeks as Matt Ioannidis is recovering from his injury.

6th LB Shaun Dion Hamilton:

-Hamilton didn’t see as much playing time in this game, but he still showed well when he was on the field. He’s got very strong instincts and continues to show that he has the skill set to be a future starter. He won’t push for a starting job as a rookie, but his roster spot is safe and his long term potential is high.

6th supp. CB Adonis Alexander:

-Alexander sat out for the 2nd straight preseason game. He has been dealing with a hamstring injury so it’s understandable why he wasn’t in the game, but he’s now missed a lot of valuable camp and preseason time. He was already behind to start the camp as he didn’t join the Redskins until early July. Alexander is likely to make the team, but the team has to hope he can come back soon to start getting some reps.

7th CB Greg Stroman:

-Stroman didn’t have a stand out game like he did week one, but he did manage three tackles and was solid in coverage. He didn’t have any opportunities to return punts like week one, but if he makes the team he has a chance to make his mark on special teams. Stroman has had a solid camp so far and with the release of Scandrick is on pace to make the 53 man roster, though it’s still possible the Redskins add a corner from outside the current roster.

7th WR Trey Quinn:

-After his first preseason game got cut short due to injury, Quinn had a strong bounce back week 2. Quinn had three catches for 36 yards in the game and also had a nice 22 yard punt return. Quinn showed really strong route running throughout the game and in the opening drive with the starters he got open in the end zone versus tight coverage, but Alex Smith‘s ball was just a little behind him. Quinn could be in the mix to take over punt return duties this year and is pretty safe to make the team at this point.

UDFA CB Danny Johnson:

-Johnson had another really good game and he’s had an impressive all-around camp. He matches up well both inside and outside and shows pretty advanced cover skills. Johnson’s emergence in camp is probably one of the biggest reasons why the Redskins felt comfortable releasing Orlando Scandrick this past week, and there is a real good chance Johnson breaks camp as the 4th corner on the team.

UDFA WR Cam Sims:

– Sims had a pretty good game and really showed a nice ability to catch contested passes on jump ball plays. Sim’s size and body control make him a threat on these types of routes and it led to a couple really impressive highlight reel catches (including a TD that was called back due to a penalty). Sims game wasn’t perfect as he also had one of the biggest mistakes of the game when he let a pass bounce off his body into the arms of a Jets defender. On top of that he didn’t seem to make much of an effort to chase down the defender. Overall it was still a good game for Sims who is making a strong case for a 53 man roster spot and if he doesn’t make the final roster, he should definitely get a practice squad role.

UDFA RB Martez Carter:

– Carter is still a long shot to make the team, but he led the team with 7 carries for 45 yards, including a big 33 yard run that helped set up one of the field goals. With some of the other backs getting injured, Carter should have plenty of opportunity in practice and in the final two preseason games to make his case for a roster spot. Most likely though his best bet is to earn a Practice Squad spot.
