Okudah, Diggs, Dugger and Chinn impress with NFL Combine measurements; Gladney, Winfield come up short

After Ohio State’s Jeffrey Okudah, the next-best cornerback is anyone’s guess at this point.

Defensive backs, including cornerbacks and safeties, all went through measurements Thursday during the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine.

As expected, Okudah was impressive, as the junior measured 6-foot-1 1/8 inch and 205 pounds, with a hand size of 9 1/8”, 32 5/8” arms and the best wingspan of any of the other corners at 78 5/8”. Okudah’s Ohio State teammate, fringe first-rounder Damon Arnette, was measured at 5-11 5/8”, 195 pounds with 9 1/8” hands, 30” arms and a 74 1/2” wingspan.

Okudah, though, is expected to be drafted within the top 10 picks, if not the top 5.

So the focus for many teams then turned to the likes of Florida’s Henderson, LSU’s Fulton, TCU’s Gladney and Alabama’s Diggs. All came into the Combine listed by their respective schools as 6-feet or taller.

That wasn’t the case after Thursday’s measurements:

• Henderson, 6-0 3/4″, 204; 31 5/8” arms; 9” hands; 75 5/8” wingspan
• Fulton: 5-11 5/8, 197; 30 5/8” arms; 9 1/8” hands; 71 7/8” wingspan
• Gladney: 5-10 1/4″, 191; 31 7/8” arms; 9” hands; 75 1/4″ wingspan
• Diggs: 6-1 3/8”, 205; 32 3/4” arms; 9 3/8” hands; 78 3/8” wingspan

The tallest cornerback who went through Combine measurements is Mississippi State’s Cameron Dantzler at 6-foot-2 1/4″, 188 pounds, with 9” hands, 30 5/8” arms and a 72 3/8” wingspan. Lamar Jackson of Nebraska wasn’t far behind at 6-2, 208; 9 1/2″; 32 1/4; 77 7/8”.

Two small school safeties stood out during the measurements in Lenoir-Rhyne’s Kyle Dugger (you can read about him here) and Southern Illinois’ Jeremy Chinn.

Dugger had the longest wingspan of any of the safeties at 78 1/2”, while his hands (10 3/8”) and arms (32 7/8”) were the largest of all the defensive backs.

Chinn, meanwhile, was the tallest defensive back at 6-3, and he was the second-heaviest at 221 pounds, behind LSU’s Tanner Muse (6-2, 227).

Other notable safety measurements include:

• Xavier McKinney, Alabama: 6-0 3/8”, 201; 8 5/8”; 30 7/8”; 75 1/2″
• Grant Delpit, LSU: 6-2 1/2″, 213; 9 1/8”; 30 3/8”; 74 1/2″
• Ashtyn Davis, California: 6-0 7/8”, 202; 9 3/8”; 30 1/2″; 75 1/8”
• Brandon Jones, Texas: 5-11 1/8”, 198; 8 ¾”; 30 1/8”; 74 ½”

Antoine Winfield Jr. of Minnesota checked in as the shortest safety with measurements of 5-9 1/8”, 203; 9 1/2″; 30 1/8”; 72 3/4″. Since 2000, only three safeties who were listed at the Combine between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-9 have been drafted in the first four rounds, the most notable being former Iowa safety Bob Sanders, a fourth-round pick by Indianapolis in 2004.
