Redskins Rookie Report After week 1 of the Preseason

1st Rd DL Daron Payne:

– Did not play as he’s still recovering from his injury in camp. He might not get much preseason work, but should be fully ready for the start of the season.

2nd Rd RB Derrius Guice:

– Guice showed nice burst on his runs and his big gain on the play that he got injured on is why so many Redskins fans were excited with his selection. Unfortunately Guice will miss the rest of the year with a torn ACL. While it’s definitely an injury you can recover from, it’s unfortunate to have to deal with one so early in his career. The lone positive here is that since it occurred early in camp, he should be ready for the start of next season. Had it occurred in the middle of the year it might have impacted two seasons.

3rd Rd OT Geron Christian:

– Christian was the one rookie that played in the game that did not really have a good game or even have any real flashes. Christian struggled throughout his time in the game in both run and pass blocking and was responsible for a couple really bad hits on Colt McCoy. Christian was a raw prospect coming into the draft and the Redskins knew that going in, but this was not a good first performance. He’s a lock to make the team and his long term upside is the key, but if the injury bug hits the Redskins again along the offensive line it could be a concern if Christian needs to play this season.

4th Rd S Troy Apke:

– Apke had a solid game with six combined tackles and a pass defensed in the game. His speed and recovery ability was very noticeable, but it was also clear that his instincts need some work as he was a step late on a few plays. It was a promising first game for Apke who will mainly be used on special teams and a back-up role this year.

5th Rd DL Tim Settle:

– Settle was by far the most impressive rookie of the night. He got a good amount of playing time and he showed why a number of draft analysts thought he was more of a 2nd or 3rd round talent (which is reportedly the grade the Redskins had on him as well). Settle was unblockable at times and a major force along the defensive line. He had 5 combined tackles in the game, a pass defensed and a fumble recovery, but his impact was felt beyond the stat sheet. You could see him force early throws with his penetration and runs that had to find another hole because he was clogging the middle. While he will be behind Payne on the depth chart, expect Settle to earn a fair bit of playing time (particularly on running downs) if he keeps playing like this.

6th Rd LB Shaun Dion Hamilton:

– Hamilton received a lot of 2nd half playing time and led the team with 9 combined tackles in the game. He showed good instincts and good pursuit angles. While it was just one preseason game, it did show that the Redskins might have gotten a steal if he can stay healthy. Hamilton did get blocked out of a couple key plays by the Patriots, but overall it was a net positive game for the Alabama rookie.

6th Rd Supp. CB Adonis Alexander:

– Did not play, not sure if injury related or maybe the Redskins didn’t feel he was fully ready given that he just joined the team last month in the supplemental draft. He’s facing a battle at the bottom of the Redskins depth chart, so it will be interesting to see if he’s able to play next week.

7th Rd CB Greg Stroman:

– Stroman had a nice game both in coverage and on special teams. He’s had an up-and-down camp so far, but this was a good showing for him. What could lock up a roster spot for him is his return ability. The Redskins could opt to take Jamison Crowder off punt returns as his value as a receiver is more important. If Stroman can show he’s the best option of the bunch behind Crowder it could earn him a spot.

7th Rd WR Trey Quinn:

– Quinn got injured early in the game and didn’t return. His injury situation hasn’t been announced yet, but it did look like a semi-serious injury that could cause him to miss time.

UDFA CB Danny Johnson:

– Really good game for Danny Johnson he made a couple really nice plays in coverage. Liked what I saw all around with his instincts, ball skills and coverage ability. He’s going to make it really tough for the Redskins to cut him, because if he keeps playing like this he might not make it to the practice squad. Johnson also had a nice punt return in his lone opportunity.

UDFA WR Cam Sims:

– Sims got into the game earlier than expected with the starting receivers and Brian Quick all sitting out. He was able to make a nice impression with 2 catches for 74 yards on his only two targets, including a 57 yard catch down the sideline. Sims has a long way to go to make the team, but this was definitely a positive game for him and could help him earn a practice squad spot.
