Boise State edge Curtis Weaver: Is he a first-rounder or a Day 3 prospect for 2020 NFL draft?

NFL Draft News
Curtis Weaver

Boise State edge Curtis Weaver is a difficult player to assess for scouts and draft analysts alike.

You have to love his production – 13.5 sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss this season to go along with 52 tackles – but there are questions about his size. And his athletic ability.

It’s those issues that have some analysts dropping Weaver down on their own player rankings. The latest Fanspeak-Steve big board lists him as the No. 64 overall prospect, which would make him a fringe second-rounder and the 11th-best edge. Matt Miller of the Bleacher Report calls Weaver a potential riser, but also has him rated as the 12th-best edge rusher and No. 77 overall prospect. The Athletic’s Dane Brugler lists Weaver as his No. 75 prospect.

So, where do teams rank the 6-foot-3, 266 pound junior? Round 3 or 4, according to Charlie Campbell’s latest “NFL Hot Press” report.

From the Walter Football report:

“A few teams had Weaver in the third round, and a couple had Weaver in the third/fourth round. They felt Weaver was a try-hard player who faces some some physical limitations for the NFL.”

The report also wonders if Weaver’s measurements will change once he goes through the Combine. Even if he checks in at the same height and around the same weight, “they are still not ideal size and length for a pro edge rusher.”

However, some scouts and analysts have questioned the strength of this group of pass rushers, so there’s also the chance Weaver could still wind up going in Round 2.
