Redskins Weekly – Free Agency Recap

Redskins Personnel Washington Commanders

With the Redskins being quiet so far on the free agency front I have just a few thoughts on the fellow NFC East teams.  But first the Skins and what is going on so far.  I don’t have a problem with how things have moved so far.  But I do think the team really has to finally address the safety position.  And if Reggie Nelson comes in, I am intrigued more than bringing back Golson.  But I would rather take a chance on two to three years of Eric Weddle.  I think he would be more of upgrade and allows them to push back finding a safety in the draft to 2017 and address the defensive line now.  But the other teams in where I want to go because New York and Philly have put pen to paper on plenty of free agents.

First the Giants and let me start with what happened after the 6-10 finish.  So they fired Tom Coughlin which I really don’t see a problem with.  But they kept the GM, promoted the OC to coach and kept the DC?  So Coughlin was the whole issue why this team has been failing?  And what does Jerry Reece?  He goes all Vinnystyle Wednesday by spending huge money on guys like Olivier Vernon and Janoris Jenkins.  I am not concerned with the Giants at all.  Maybe Snacks Harrison is a decent deal but almost $50 mil for a possible two down guy is also crazy.  Jenkins got Revis money when he wasn’t even what the Rams considered the best corner on their bad team.  And Vernon getting $85 million?  Let’s watch this all play out.

As for the other team that was active, the Philadelphia Eagles.  Philly is getting all kinds of props for unloading the deals of Murray, Alonso and Maxwell to move up in the 1st and 4th rounds.  I understand these moves after last seasons dumpster fire but maybe with a new coaching staff it could have been a good call to see what these guys got.  They are not old and have had success in the past.  Two were very sought after free agents a year ago and one was defensive rookie of the year just three seasons ago.  I may have waited to jump on dumping these three so fast but I know I am in the minority.  As for adding Chase Daniel I don’t think it is a bad call.  Bradford got paid and I wasn’t surprised but in the NFC East we saw last season what can happen if your starter goes down and you have garbage left as a backup.  Bringing in the Buffalo guys will just have to play out but their biggest move may have already happened from Buffalo when they talked Jim Schwartz to join the staff.  The Eagles did play this off season so far better than the Giants.

Not much to say about what Dallas has going on.  I think they fit Chris Long a lot better than the Redskins.  But does Chris Long have the ability to get back to 2012?  I don’t know and that is why I think the Redskins may have used him to wake up Junior Galette on his new demands.  So far Manziel or Griffin is not a Cowboy and don’t expect it since RG3 should get a better chance to start depending how Colin Kaepernick‘s saga ends.  And I can’t see a team signing Manziel soon but who knows?  Dallas still needs secondary help like the Redskins so both teams in the coming days could be looking at a lot of the same guys.
