Discussion Question: Which Free Agents Deserve The Franchise Tag?

February 15, 2014 in NFL

There are a lot of big name free agents out there right now, which ones will be taken off market with the franchise tag?

Some Names to consider:

OT Eugene Monroe, DE Greg Hardy, C Alex Mack, S T.J. Ward, WR Eric Decker, CB Vontae Davis, OT Branden Albert, CB Brent Grimes, CB Aquib Talib, TE Jimmy Graham, DT Linval Joseph, OT Jared Veldheer, CB Alterraun Verner, OLB Brian Orakpo

Who do you think will get tagged? Also is there anyone else that should be considered?

The Panthers should be fine without Greg Hardy. He's a great player, but they're deep at DE and can always draft one anyway. Mario Addison isn't a big name player, but he's played very well as a rotational pass rusher the last two years and should be able to pick up a good bit of Hardy's slack if/when he leaves.

They'd be better off using that money to re-sign Jordan Gross, Captain Munnerlyn, Ted Ginn, and adding a few mid-level free agents who can upgrade the OL and WR corp. They might take a slight step back on defense without Hardy, but if they use the cap space right they'll be a better overall football team as a result.
