Weekly Blogger Debate – NFL Combine Edition

Steve O Speak

Thanks to John & Nolan for joining Steve in our Weekly Blogger Debate.  This week we discuss the NFL Combine, which will be the focus for NFL Draft fans the next 5 days.

So what’s your opinion to these questions?

1.  Who do you expect to have the biggest Combine performance and why?

JOHN MANUEL:

David Wilson, VA Tech.  If he flies in the 40, he could rise on draft boards.

NOLAN MUCCIARONE:

I don’t think anybody knows yet. Give me a small school guy to make the biggest splash and become the talk of the combine.

STEVEOSPEAK:

I think that Boston College LB Luke Kueckly will have a tremendous combine. He’ll show good instincts in the positional drills, and should time out faster and quicker than most give him credit for.

2.  Which player will hurt their draft stock the most with their Combine performance and why?

JOHN MANUEL:

From what it sounds like, Alshon Jeffrey could crush himself if he is slow.  Probably going to hear a lot of Mike Williams’ comparisons I am guessing.

NOLAN MUCCIARONE:

Orson Charles. I still haven’t forgave him for breaking the Gators’ 2006 BCS National Championship trophy and then signing with Georgia.

STEVEOSPEAK:

Hmm I’ll say Brock Osweiler, I know he is only throwing against air, but that hitch in his delivery will get scrutinized with every miss throw.

3.  Which QB do you think will look the best?

JOHN MANUEL:

Luck if he throws.  Too bad Skins didn’t go Beck for 16 games so we would have the 1st pick right now.  If not, and with Griffin not throwing and Tannehill out.  I would say Brandon Weeden, he looks impressive as a thrower.

NOLAN MUCCIARONE:

John Brantley. Oh wait, you said best. Yeah, I’m going to go with Nick Foles.

STEVEOSPEAK:

Andrew Luck will look the best if he participates, if not Brandon Weeden could steal the show.

4.  What is the most overrated Combine drill?

JOHN MANUEL:

It would be getting yelled at by that dude while benching.  That whole scenario is overrated.  They will overplay that.  For real, maybe its QBs doing the jumping skills.  Unless you’re Russell Wilson, he will need to jump to throw in the NFL.

NOLAN MUCCIARONE:

The bench press. Does anybody other than LaRon Landry think it means anything?

STEVEOSPEAK:

I think the 40 yard dash has to be the most overrated. Not to say that speed isn’t crucial, but there is a huge difference between game and track speed, especially without pads on, and people spend months working on their track technique.

5.  Round to the nearest 5…about how many players will Mike Mayock say “I love this kid!”?

JOHN MANUEL:

4 days x 300+ players + excessive boring down time – Rich Eisen 40 talk = 210 times.  My guess is Doug Martin leads with 18.

NOLAN MUCCIARONE:

75.

STEVEOSPEAK:

I’ll say at least 200 times. There will be a few players that Mayock doesn’t love, but most he will find at least one thing that he ‘loves’.
