Farewell to Griffin & Morris
It was only in 2012 when two rookies on the Redskins offense looked to be the long term future of the organization. Those two guys are now no longer Redskins. Robert Griffin and Alfred Morris both found new teams in the last couple days. Both of their exits were expected for months now and it is time to move on. So how will this play out?
Griffin had no chance of coming back next season after Kirk Cousins performed the way he did. What I like about Griffin’s move for him is the coach he is going to and the lack of expectations for the Browns. If he went to the Broncos or the Jets and was expected to start it could have been a disaster. I trust Hue Jackson working with Griffin. I think he will be honest with him and it will be Griffin who will need to change a lot of things to show he can be a NFL starting quarterback. I have to say I was really surprised how much money Griffin will be getting and could get. It just shows what QBs make.
As for Morris I thought after the season there was still a chance he could be back. But those thoughts diminished quickly. The worst part is clearly he is going to the Dallas Cowboys. And he should be able to help them but with running backs you just never know. But I think it was a low risk move for the Cowboys. It will be tough seeing Morris in the Cowboys uniform because everyone wants him to succeed. This puts all Skins fans in a tough spot.
How do these moves effect the Redskins? I think bigger than most think. Griffin leaving has zero effect because they have a guy they like at quarterback and it’s all on him now. As for the running back position I really don’t understand if the Redskins are set on Matt Jones being the starter and main back. He just didn’t show me enough as a rookie. Maybe it was because he was hurt like Gruden says but it had to more than that. When you hear about mental errors that is a concern. I almost think if they don’t sign or draft another potential guy who can play that Chris Thompson should be giving a chance to play more. I know he has a really tough time staying healthy but he showed as much as Jones did last year.
Best of luck to Robert and Alfred. 2012 was really fun. Wish it could have worked out like we thought it was heading in December of 2012.
