Redskins Free Agency: Who Should they Cut?

Free agency starts with the new league year on March 9th but teams now can begin to cut the cord with some of their currently signed players.  It’s cap casualty time and even with the Redskins in a decent cap situation a looming quarterback franchise tag we should see a few guys go bye bye.  Washington has less than $600,000 in dead money on the 2016 books and most comes from letting David Amerson go.  Gone are the days when that number was $6,000,000.

Here is who should be worried:

1-  Robert Griffin III – Saves $16.115 million
No brainer, its gonna happen not much to say other than when?  I can’t see a team trading for him or Griffin helping the Redskins by adjusting his option.  Why would he?

2- Jason Hatcher – Saves $4.234 million
He may just retire but if he doesn’t I would let Hatcher walk.  I could go for a paycut situation down to something close to a vet minimum but he just can’t stay on the field at a health level to be effective.  And one year older shouldn’t be the cure.  They need line help but would rather see that money go towards a new fix.

3- Dashon Goldson – Saves $8 million
No brainer that Goldson will not be on the roster with an eight million dollar cap number.  Maybe they work a new deal?  And I wouldn’t be completely against it but I would rather work towards a better option at safety.  And maybe go back to Goldson if need be.  More for being a leader than a safety.

4- Perry Riley – Saves $4,000,000
On last years list then went out there and was bad, then performed much better and as he seemed to be coming around, he got hurt and his season was over.  I can’t see him playing over Compton or Foster so keeping him at his number is not worth it.  If they lose Foster then I would rather see the money or a higher pick go towards his replacement.

5- Andre Roberts – Saves $3 million
Another one I felt should have been let go a year ago.  I left Pierre Garcon off this list because I think he is worth coming back even at the high number.  But Roberts time is up.  Crowder has clearly overtaken him as the third guy.

Borderline:

Kory Lichtensteiger – Would save $2.95 million if he was let go. 

A mainstay on the line for a few seasons but if the thought is he is too small to play center here than the move should be made.

Deangelo Hall – Would save $3.437 million if he is let go. 

It unfortunately might be time to say goodbye but I don’t think they do.  Maybe they bring the number down and Hall agrees just to stay here.
