Gambling through the Ages: From the Ancient to the Online Era

Steve Shoup

The concept of gambling is one that has been around for thousands of years, and has taken places all over the world. Playing a game of chance is something that was part of everyday lives for thousands of people over the past centuries, and there are lots of events that have taken place throughout history where gambling was an integral part.

Gambling in the Ancient Years

In Ancient Greece, gambling was something that took place throughout the era, and there are even examples of the activity being mentioned in Greek mythology, where the gods Poseidon, Hades and Zeus drew lots to split up and share the universe. The end result was that Poseidon took the sea, Hades took the underworld, and Zeus took the heavens.

Ancient Rome is another example of the presence of gambling from centuries ago. Gambling was rife within sports including the fights between gladiators in the Coliseum, where bets were placed on which gladiator would win the fight.  Throughout history in Europe, there was a lot of gambling taking place between, including many members of Royalty who were known to be notorious gamblers.

Gambling in the Modern Era

Over the years gambling has changed, and it is now a much more regulated and managed affair. In addition to the betting shops and casinos that popped up at popular locations all over the world, with the prime example being Las Vegas in the United States, over the past decade or so, it has also moved online and there are hundreds of websites such as netticasino, where you can enjoy a range of games of chance.

With the advancement of technology, internet speeds and a continuous desire to gamble, online casinos have made it so much easier for people to gamble on a range of different games. Online casinos are full of many different games of chance, and there is usually something for everyone. From card games such as Poker and Blackjack, to slots, roulette and craps, there is an online equivalent for every game of chance that you will find in a brick and mortar casino.

Betting on Sports and Everything else

In addition to casinos, both real and online, another of the most popular forms of gambling is betting on sports results. You can find better shops and websites that offer the chance to gamble on every sport under the sun. Gone are the days when the main sports connected to gambling were just horse racing or the football results.

Nowadays you can place bets on every sport imaginable, from everything such as US college sports to camel racing. There are online betting sites that will take your bet on absolutely anything. Simply ask for the odds on something, such as the possibility of Arsenal winning the UEFA Champions League, and you’ll be given odds for it.

You can even get odds on things that are completely unrelated to sports, such as who will win the next general election, or when there will be contact with Alien life.

Benefits of Online gambling

One of the main benefits when it comes to online gambling, is that you can do it anywhere. All you need is an internet connection. Whether you want to gamble from the comfort of your own home on your laptop, or on the bus on the way to work on your mobile phone, as long as you can get online, and of course have funds to gamble, then there is nothing to stop you.

Other benefits include the fact that you don’t have to travel to the local casino or betting shop. You don’t even need to be in the same country and the sport that you are gambling on. You could wake up one morning in your home in the UK, and an hour later, be gambling on a sporting event taking place halfway around the world. There are no limitations and no barriers. You don’t need a passport or to even pack a suitcase or get dressed.

Things to be wary of

As with everything in the digital world, you need to be careful. When it comes to online gambling, you need to be very careful with your credit card details, as this is what you’ll be using to fund your bets. You should try and stick to the major and more known casinó and betting websites, rather than some obscure site you’ve never heard of before. If you are concerned about entering your private information and credit card details, then trust that instant.

With your computer or laptop, make sure that you have an up to date antivirus program or software that will protect you against any malware or spyware. There are a number of excellent free options that you can consider such as Malware Bytes, which is one of the leading anti-malware programs in the world, and who offer a very good free version.

Just use your common sense, and also remember that any form of gambling, whether online or at an actual casino, can be addictive. Don’t gamble more than you can afford to lose, and if you notice that you are getting addicted and frequently visiting online casinos, it might be time to step back and take a break from your online activity.
