Some Of Most Common Injuries In Football

NFL Steve O Speak

Before you even consider the idea of being a football player, you need to understand first its stake. For starters, it is the kind of sports that is not for the faint of heart. Second, you need to acknowledge the fact that it always involves the possibility of getting hurt. In fact, despite the different safety precautions present, you cannot deny the fact that football is a rough sport. This alone is proof that it can always result in players getting injured.

So, what exactly are the different injuries present in this sport? Let’s take a look at them below.

Traumatic Injuries

Since football is a full contact sport, it is expected for different types of traumatic injuries to the surface.  Apparently, though, the most common one is none other than a knee injury. This is most especially traumatizing if it involves the ACL, PCL, and the knee cartilage. Moreover, players always run the risk of getting ankle sprains and strains. Keep in mind that this is due to the surfaces being played on.

Apart from the aforementioned, another common injury is the shoulder injury. The cartilage bumper that basically circles the socket part is particularly vulnerable to injury. This usually happens to players in either the offensive or defensive lineman. In addition to these, another injury that really surfaces is a hip pointer. It can happen after a tackle injury occurs. This one here, though, indicates that there is a bone bruise, though it can also be a fracture on the pelvis. Either way, it is absolutely painful.

Head Injuries

Due to the nature of the sports, head injuries can happen anytime. Sure, you can say that more padding has been equipped to make helmets even more effective. However, this does not necessarily remove the risk of obtaining a head, or worse, brain injury. When compared to other sports, players of this game are always susceptible to concussions. The latter simply refers to a sudden change in mental state as a result of a traumatic impact. Players who suffer from this injury may not always lose consciousness, though. Still, there are signs that suggest a player suffer from such. Here are some of them:

  •         Blurry vision
  •         Dizziness
  •         Difficulty concentrating
  •         Drowsiness
  •         Headaches
  •         Loss of balance
  •         Nausea
  •         Numbness/tingling

It is worth noting, though, that a concussion does not just occur in the game field. Some are often a result of medical malpractice. For instance, a player seeks medical attention after getting a head injury after taking a hard hit. There are chances that the attending physicians could only make the situation worse for whatever reason there is. This is why some football players have a medical malpractice lawyer at hand in case the need for such professional arises.

Overuse Injuries

As the name suggests, this type of injury happens because of back pain in general. Overuse, in some ways, results in overtraining syndrome. For example, a player is trying to make recovery, but does it in a way that goes beyond what his body could currently accept. This is basically what overtraining syndrome means. In addition, the likes of knee pain can develop from overuse. Fortunately, this type of injury can easily be treated, with quadriceps being the most effective strengthening program to date.

Heat Injuries

Heat injuries are really a big concern. This is something that players often experience at the very start of a season. Keep in mind that most training camps jumpstart in August, which is the month of some of the highest temperatures and humidity. Considering the extreme physical exertion of a single practice or game, it is possible for excessive sweating to occur. This eventually results in the depletion of salt and water in the body.
