Favorites and Underdogs Picks for 2024 NFL Divisional Playoff

Steve O Speak

The 2024 NFL playoffs are entering the divisional round, and the hype among the fans is palpable.

With the top seeds back in action, matchups will be both exciting and dramatic. Let’s examine each game of the upcoming games and see who the favorites and the underdogs are in the matchups.

AFC Matchups

Kansas City Chiefs vs. Houston Texans

The Kansas City Chiefs finished with an impressive 15-2 record in the regular season and are an obvious favorite going into this game.

They have one of the better offenses in the league, with Patrick Mahomes as the quarterback, who can score almost on command. Of course, a great defense packs that up in a big-stopping team.

Meanwhile, the Texans are going into the game with a team that put on quite a performance against the Los Angeles Chargers in the wild-card match-up. They showed much defensive might after forcing Justin Herbert to give up four picks.

A trip to Arrowhead Stadium is never a cakewalk, and with the Chiefs holding home field and experience in playoff-pressure situations, the oddsmakers are making them the ones to beat here.

Buffalo Bills vs. Baltimore Ravens

Definitely a game where two of the better playoff teams go at it.

The Buffalo Bills finished the season 13-4 and have been one of the most consistent teams. Josh Allen as a quarterback, has become a dual-threat nightmare in the air and on the ground.

The Ravens are fresh from a strong win against the Pittsburgh Steelers and will likely turn to their high-powered running game led by Lamar Jackson. This game could go either way, but since the Bills are at home in Buffalo’s cold January weather, they will be favored here.

NFC Matchups

Detroit Lions vs. Washington Commanders

The Detroit Lions enter this matchup as the number-one seed in the NFC and are feeling pretty good after a very impressive regular season at 14-3.

They have proven they can compete with anyone in the league. The balance, explosiveness even, on both sides of their offense is a different dynamic in how teams approach trying to defend them.

The Washington Commanders have certainly upset the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round, but their fortune could take an opposite turn on Sunday as they face a well-balanced team such as the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. The only hope that any chance could make the Commanders the winner is in an A-game.

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Los Angeles Rams

In this pairing, the Philadelphia Eagles are favored having finished with a good 14-3 record. As a quarterback, Jalen Hurts has taken over the team with his ability to pass and run to make plays.

The Rams come into this game from a win against the Minnesota Vikings, but they will have to significantly raise their level of play to take on the Eagles, a tough team at home.

This season, the Eagles’ stout defense will need to work hard to hold down Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.

These divisional-round matches will be very exciting to watch on January 18 and 19. We are guaranteed to see upsets, great plays, and overall outstanding football from both the favorites and the underdogs. While the Chiefs and Lions do look ready, one should not count out Texans and Commanders when they rise to an occasion.

Every game will have meaning as teams rush for position in their conference championships and, more importantly, for Super Bowl LIX on February 9 in New Orleans.
