Phillip Brooks achieves dream with Kansas City Chiefs

Many former college football stars would be bummed about not getting selected in the NFL Draft. Not Phillip Brooks. But, the Phillip Brooks Kansas City Chiefs partnership is special to Brooks for another reason. He grew up in Kansas City and has spent his entire life cheering for the team. He also once played for a youth football team that routinely called on Chiefs players like Dwayne Bowe and Dontari Poe to attend its camps.

Brooks got his first taste of what life would be like playing for the Chiefs by attending the team’s annual rookie minicamp in early May. He spent three days practicing alongside other players hoping to catch on with the Chiefs. And while he admitted he’s still getting comfortable with the Kansas City playbook, he also suggested the Phillip Brooks Chiefs pairing could eventually be a match made in heaven.

“I’d say I had a solid weekend,” Brooks said. “I missed some things I could have cleaned up but it’s like freshman year again in college. Re-learning all the plays. Once I get comfortable doing that and learning the system more, I can play my game more.”

Brooks also showed a clear understanding of where he would potentially fit in within the Kansas City Chiefs roster.

While he recorded over 2,000 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns during his time at Kansas State, Brooks said he knows he’ll have to carve out a niche on special teams to stick with the team. He also said his former Wildcats teammate Felix Anudike-Uzomah, who was selected by Kansas City in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, has provided him with some excellent advice.

Brooks revealed to reporters: “He just told me, ‘We win championships here, so come with that mentality with your work ethic and doing everything right on and off the field.’ The professionalism here is great. The work ethic. All of that. He told me to come in ready to go because they’re not playing any games. Trying to get back to that Super Bowl again.”

Phillip Brooks’s NFL career might not ultimately see him spend much time in Kansas City with the Chiefs. But for now, he’s enjoying every second of his tenure with his favorite NFL team.
