Where Will Jimmy Garoppolo Play Next Season?

Steve O Speak

The quarterback market was hot at the beginning of the offseason but there were a few teams that were unable to make a move at the quarterback position. The San Francisco 49ers moved up in the draft last year to select quarterback Trey Lance as their next quarterback but still have Jimmy Garoppolo under contract for a final season with just under a $27 million cap hit.

The NFL offseason can look like a NASCAR event with how quickly things can change for a team. So just before making any Coca-Cola 600 predictions, let’s look around the National Football League and find out if there is a landing spot for the former second-round pick.

San Francisco 49ers

Okay, this might seem like a cop-out but there are reports circulating that Trey Lance is not progressing as well as the 49ers hoped and this team is still ready to compete in a tough NFC West division. They still have an opening after both the Seattle Seahawks and the Arizona Cardinals took a step back since the end of last season. The 49ers’ best chance at winning games here and making a playoff push is Jimmy G.

He finished last season throwing for 3,810 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions and will make the right play a lot more often than not. The Niners are not going to get much if they move him now coming off an injury and might just make one last push before losing Garoppolo to free agency.

Seattle Seahawks

There is another team in the NFC West that could try to bolster their offense after trading away their franchise quarterback during the offseason. The Seattle Seahawks quarterback room consists of Drew Lock and Geno Smith, so they can use a solid quarterback.

It’s not often that you see a divisional trade with a quarterback included since they face off twice per season and with only one year of control, the Seahawks are not going to offer much to take the contract here. I think Jimmy G should be able to connect with Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf to the point they can be competitive for a playoff spot.

Houston Texans

This is the most likely situation in my opinion as the Texans have a young quarterback in his second season with David Mills and need a veteran presence to help him learn. Houston’s General Manager was with Garoppolo in New England before the two left the organization. The Houston Texans have a chance to upset some people and Jimmy G can compete with Mills for the starting job and push Mills to continue improving after his rookie season.

Garoppolo should be able to increase his value if he goes to Houston and is able to win the starting job, but the talent in Houston is nowhere near what it is in San Francisco. This spot makes a lot of sense if they want Davis Mills to take a backseat and if the 49ers were willing to eat some of the contract for a better draft pick to make Garoppolo’s contract a little more enticing for another team.

Jimmy Garoppolo is coming off a rotator cuff injury that required surgery and is still a very young quarterback at 30 years old. However, he has not been able to be the reason that a team wins as San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan would take the ball out of his hands to make a Super Bowl run. It is difficult for a team to make Garoppolo their franchise quarterback as he has dealt with a few major surgeries and has trouble consistently staying on the field.

If I were to make an early prediction, he will stay with San Francisco for the upcoming NFL season. However, I see him leaving after the regular season as an unrestricted free agent.
