Djokovic set for fifth Wimbledon title

The 32 year old Serbian continues to be the leading star of World tennis and has held the number one position on this occasion since early November of 2018. This is little surprise considering at present he holds three of the four majors, with just the French out of his reach considering the continued dominance of Rafael Nadal on clay. He was recently knocked out in the semi-final stage of the French Open but this is a competition he has only won on one occasion back in 2016, so this was little surprise. Djokovic is also a three time winner of the U.S Open with victories in 2011, 2015 and 2018. The recent 2018 victory saw him beat Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets in another dominating performance. This also meant at the time that he pulled level with Pete Sampras on 14 Grand slam titles.

Djokovic has of course surpassed this total following his recent 2019 victory at the Australian Open. This tournament is the major he has had the most success at with an incredible seven titles to date. These coming in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and of course earlier this season. The victory earlier this season saw him dominate rival Rafael Nadal with a straight sets success winning 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. This was just another indication of how well he is playing at present.

These are all clear reasons as to why he is such a strong favourite to win Wimbledon this season. He has also picked up four titles to date at Wimbledon, with these coming in 2011, 2014, 2015 and of course last season. He heads in as the defending champion following his comprehensive 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 victory over Kevin Anderson in the 2018 final. This victory was also the key indication that the Serbian was back to his absolute best and was his first title on the ATP tour for a little over 12 months.

As Djokovic continues his dominance he will now be aiming to top the list for all time major wins come the end of his glittering career. A win at Wimbledon won see him move to 16 and just two shy of Rafael Nadal in second, with a further two to Roger Federer.
