Future Classic winner?

The stunning event that is Royal Ascot has kicked off for another year with the exquisite fashion on show. The new Royal Megan was part of the Royal procession, which gave it an international feel. Day one is normally about Aiden O’Brien and Ryan Moore but Frankie and Gosden dominated it landing an impressive treble. Many punters were getting involved with online sports betting that included a big gamble on the once raced Calyx.

Calyx had only made his debut just ten days previous at Newmarket but it was one that stamped class. He travelled well but was keen through out before putting the race to bed on the bridle. He was then pitched in to the Coventry and the money continued to pour in for the son of Kingman in which he was sent off a general 2/1 favourite. This was ahead of the long time ante post favourite Sergei Prokofiev who is trained by maestro Aiden O’Brien. The race as it always seems to do split in to two groups with Calyx on the near side. He again travelled ominously well and had to be committed for home very early due to no horses taking him further into the race. Frankie pushed him clear by an incredible 10 lengths on his side of the track in which Advertise and the previously mentioned Sergei closing on there side of the track in behind.

This was a jaw dropping performance as looking at other results on the day he was also running on the less favoured part of the track. Another positive was the fact the horse was able to virtually run on his own for much of the contest on just his second start proving he has the mental attributes to go with his physical ability. His trainer John Gosden was also extremely complementary of the horse and he looks to have another star on his hands.

So what is the likely future of the horse and is he a future Classic winner in waiting? It is always difficult with these young horses to bet them with confidence for next years Classic’s as some may not train on. Following this result yesterday the horse was put in as a general 4/1 outright favourite for the 2000 Guineas from around 16/1 previous. His trainer was quoted following the Coventry saying, “He is a horse who makes you get up in the morning”. This is worth taking note considering his list of recent stars such as Enable and Cracksman. Furthermore on visual impressions this horse looks a future star and is worth investing in as if he improves further which can be expected then the 4/1 could look a massive price on the day if all goes well.
