Things to Consider When Purchasing a Portable Basketball Hoop

NBA Steve O Speak

Playing basketball is a superb way to burn calories, improve coordination, have fun and socialize. However, purchasing a basketball can be quite overwhelming. This is true because the market is flooded with plenty of basketball hoops from a variety of brands, and come in an array of styles, materials, and designs. Nonetheless, while shooting shoot hoops can be quite challenging, finding the right basketball hoop does not need to be so.

Whether you’re planning to purchase a basketball hoop for practice drills, or playing competitive games, we have rounded essential tips that will help you decide which hoop is right for you.

1) Location

The first consideration to make when choosing a portable basketball hoop is location or rather space available. See, even though the portable hoops can be erected anywhere, you need to have ample space for playing. Ideally, sports experts recommend large spaces such as a large, paved surface like your driveway. However, you should be aware that placing the basketball hoop on public spaces such as on the street or sidewalk is not only unsafe but also illegal.

2) Basketball Hoop Type

Basketball hoops are available in a gamut of design, but the two most common designs are portable and in-ground. Each of these designs carries its own set of pros and cons and should help you in determining which is your ideal hoop. Portable hoops usually come with a large plastic base wheel, which offers extreme flexibility as it can be rolled anywhere and can be taken with it anywhere. On the other hand, the lack of the large plastic base wheel on the in-ground basketball hoop makes it’s a space-intensive option. However, for stability, they are cemented to the ground, which bolsters the stability but contributes to its rigidity. These designs are ideal for the aggressive players.

3) Backboard Material

Hand in hand with the basketball hoop design is the backboard material. The backboards are similarly available in an array of materials. However, when it comes to the backboard, the choice of material determines the age and level of the players. For instance, graphite and polyethylene backboards are primarily designed for use by kids. On the other hand, acrylic backboards are often ideal for beginners or intermediate players since they provide a clear playing surface. Finally, high-performance and durable backboards such as polycarbonate backboards, are ideal for the serious and aggressive players.

4) Backboard Size

Similar to backboard material, the size of the backboard also determines the age of play. Typically, backboard sizes are available in three dimensions; 44”, which is ideal for players learning to shoot, 48-50”, which is ideal for teens practicing drives and an array of shot, while the 54-60” bracket is for the more serious and aggressive players.

5) Height Adjustment Mechanism

If you are looking for a convenient and versatile basketball hoop, you can choose an adjustable hoop that allows you to adjust the hoop by either raising or lowering the hoop to accommodate all type of players.

Choosing a basketball hoop is not challenging after all; use and follow out criteria above to find your right hoop. If you religiously follow our tips, you’re sure to narrow your selection and find the right basketball hoop that is just right for you.
