Whether you’re looking at it as a money-making business or as a fun-filled past time – sportsbetting can initially seem like a complicated idea to grasp.

Indeed it can be downright confusing, what with its wide range of bets and huge betting markets and its differing ways of quoting odds (+500 or 5-1).

And it also helps to know something about the background history of sports betting in the US and how betting laws differ from state to state. For instance, you can bet online in New Jersey, but only in-person at a betting window in many other states.

  • Since when has sports-betting been legal in New Jersey?

Answer: Since June 14, 2018, when Governor Phil Murphy signed NJ sports betting into State law. 

  • Is there a sports betting age limit In NJ?

Answer: Yes, you have to be 21 or older to participate and you will need to produce ID proof when you register. The age restriction may differ in other states. 

  • Who offers sports betting in NJ?

Answer:  In-person betting is offered at all but one of the Atlantic City’s dozen Casinos and at two New Jersey race-tracks. But by far, most betting business (84% in October 2019) is conducted online by 18 mobile sportsbooks licensed by the casinos and race tracks. You can get the full list of these sportsbooks here.

  • Is online and mobile betting legal in New Jersey?

Answer: Yes, if you have registered with proof of your age and all wagers are made within the state’s borders. Geo-tracking will prevent you from doing otherwise.

  • Can anyone go to a retail betting lounge or open a sportsbook on a browser or smart phone and start betting?

Answer: No. Would-be punters must first register, open an account and make a first deposit before they can start betting.

  • Are offshore sportsbooks legal in NJ?

Answer: No. The Wire act makes betting across state borders illegal.

  • Is there a glossary of betting terms that will help me better understand sports betting in New Jersey?

  • What are the most popular types of sports wagers?

Answer: Probably parlay and live sports betting, but traditional money-line, spread and totals game bets come close and some futures and prop bets on players are not far behind.
