2013 NFL Draft Grades: Indianapolis Colts

Indianapolis Colts Draft Grade:

Round 1, #24 – DE Bjoern Werner, Florida State – Grade: A+

-I love this pick for the Colts, they had to get more pass rushing help and Werner does just that. Some may have concerns about his ability to stand up, but that isn’t a worry for me. I think he will make a big impact as a rookie for Indianapolis.

Round 3, #86 – OG Hugh Thorton, Illinois – Grade: C+

-I don’t mind the Colts continuing to build up their offensive line to protect Andrew Luck (though they had bigger needs), but Thorton is a bit of a reach at this pick. There were better linemen on the board, that would have made more of a sense here.

Round 4, #121 – C Khaled Holmes, USC – Grade: B-

-Continuing to build the line is fine, especially with a solid pick-up like Holmes who has some nice starting potential in a year or two.

Round 5, #139 – DT Montori Hughes – Tennessee-Martin – Grade: A-

-This is a great value pick for the Colts, Hughes had a huge Senior Bowl week and offers a lot of upside. He can play both the nose tackle and defensive end positions in the Colts base 3-4 defense. He will also be able to kick inside when they show four man fronts. I think he will make an impact as a rookie and become a starter down the road.

Round 6, #192 – S John Boyett, Oregon – Grade: C+

-The Colts needed to add some depth to this position, while this is a bit of a reach Boyett has a little potential.

Round 7, #230 – RB Kerwynn Williams, Utah St. – Grade: B-

-Vic Ballard had a nice rookie year, but he could use a complementary back, that is what Williams brings to the table.

Round 7, #254 – TE Justice Cunningham, South Carolina – Grade: B-

-This is a nice value pick at the end of the draft. Cunningham has some nice potential, and could develop down the road for the Colts.

Overall: B+

-The Colts get some extra credit for Vontae Davis in this grade, but the real value comes from Werner and Hughes. I love the Colts approach in continuing to add to their defense and their offensive line. Those were the two weakpoints last year and between a strong free agency and draft they are vastly improved. I would have liked to have seen them maybe select some better linemen who were on the board, but overall it was a good draft for the Colts as they look to return to the playoffs.
