NFL at 100: Landmark moments in NFL History

NFL Steve O Speak

With the new NFL (National Football League) season schedule finally revealed, excitement across the country is building as team fans dream that this year could finally be their chance to claim glory.

The 2019 season will be the 100th instalment of one of the state’s most popular sporting pastime sand it’s now been confirmed that the season will begin on September 5, 2019 with the Chicago Bears hosting the Green Bay Packers. The season will conclude with Super Bowl LIV, the league’s championship game, which, although yet to be confirmed, has been pencilled in for February 2, 2020, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.

To mark this special 100th season, we look back at some of the most historic moments that have taken place over the last century.

NFL Draft is created in 1935

Burt Bell, co-owner of the Philadelphia Eagles, was struggling to field a competitive side back in the 30’s and his eagles outfit were having serious troubles attracting talent. Fed up with his team’s performance in the middle of the decade Bell suggested that the NFL should consider moving towards a draft.

Bell had strong feelings that the draft would increase competition and level the playing field; a move he hoped would help ensure the financial viability of all competing franchises. His idea was  universally embraced leading to the inception of the NFL draft.

Monday Night Football

On September 21, 1970 ABC televised the very first Monday Night Football game between the New York Jets at the Cleveland Browns with the Browns coming on top 31-21.

Monday Night Football was revolutionary, beaming pro football into the homes of millions around America at prime time and making the NFL far more accessible to families- boosting the profile of the sport in the process.

Bills secure memorable comeback Win

The undisputed king of NFL comebacks, Frank Reich, guided the Buffalo Bills to an almost impossible victory versus the Houston Oilers in a wild card playoff game on January 3, 1993.

Reich overturned a remarkable 32-point deficit in the third quarter, inspiring the Bills to take a 38-35 lead in the fourth. However, the drama didn’t end there, and the Oilers battled back to tie the game before regulation. In overtime, Bills starlet Henry Jones intercepted a pass, giving the Bills a field goal position. Steve Christie kicked the winning field goal, leading to a dramatic 41-38 overtime victory.

Despite a disappointing 2018 campaign for the Bills, they will certainly be hoping to invoke the spirit of that famous comeback and many regular Bills fans are claiming free bet no deposit bets to back their team for glory in the 2019 campaign.

Miami Dolphins: The Perfect season

In the NFL’s modern incarnation there’s only been one team that has breezed through the entire regular season without defeat: The Miami Dolphins in 1972. As well as brushing past all the competition in the regular season they also swept through the playoffs and Super Bowl, remaining invincible for the year.

Although there were only 14 games in the regular 1972 campaign, The Dolphins finished with a 17-0 record that year; a feat made more impressive after losing their star quarterback Bob Griese who suffered a broken ankle in Week 5.
