The Good – AFC East and The Bad – AFC South

Owner Woody Johnson brought in a new head coach in Todd Bowles and suddenly, the turmoil has disappeared and the team is playing respectable football. While the offense has played well within itself behind the leadership of veteran QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, it’s the defense that has helped the team establish a 4-2 record. Currently, the defense ranks towards the top of the league in scoring defense and yards allowed.

As for the rest of the division, the Miami Dolphins were expected to contend for a playoff spot. However, a slow start (1-3) left doubts until they rallied to win its last two and even its record at 3-3. Bringing up the rear is the Buffalo Bills. So far, they have been a bit inconsistent, but they still sit at 3-4 and are by no means out of the running for a playoff spot.

The AFC South

At the beginning of the season, the Indianapolis Colts were selected by many experts to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. For reasons that no one can fathom, they currently sit at the top of the South division with a paltry 3-4 record. Much of the blame goes to the play of QB Andrew Luck who missed three games due to injury, but failed to inspire when healthy. Bad play calling (worst fake punt in league history) and lack of a rushing attack have been contributing factors. The only positive the Colts can take away from the season so far is the fact they are 3-0 within the division. Of course, that’s not saying much when the rest of the division is a combined 5-15 on the season.

The Houston Texans are sitting in second place at 2-5 due in large part to the play of All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins who already has 776 yards receiving and 5 TDs. Ironically, the Jacksonville Jaguars also sit at 2-5 with its only victories coming against the Dolphins and Bills. Finally, the Tennessee Titans (1-5) are led by rookie QB Marcus Mariota who has had a difficult time acclimating to the NFL. As a result, the Titans have one of the worst offenses in the league.
