Weekly Blogger Debate: Debating Top 5 Sports Questions

NCAA Football NFL NHL Steve O Speak

Thanks to Bruce from Baltimore Beatdown, Kevin from HogsHaven, John from Fanspeak, Parks from Fanspeak/HogsHaven/LancersBlog, and Joe from GMen HQ for joining the debate this week!

Now give your answers below to keep the debate going:

1.) Do the 49ers have an offense that can win the Super Bowl?

Bruce @ Baltimore Beatdown:

Absolutely they do! They showed they can go head-to-head in beating the Packers in Green Bay and combined with their defense, they are currently the team to beat in representing the NFC in the race to the Super Bowl.

Kevin @ HogsHaven:

Defense wins Super Bowls, and they have the best one by a mile, so by default, yes, they have an offense that can win it too.

John @ Fanspeak:

I think they do.  I am not a huge Alex Smith fan but they have enough around him for him to be successful.   Vernon Davis is a complete monster.  Plus, they should have been there last year.

Parks @ Fanspeak, HogsHaven & LancersBlog:

Definitely, they have a lot of weapons with Randy Moss, Frank Gore, and Vernon Davis. They also have pretty good depth and some guys they haven’t even really “unleashed” yet like LaMichael James and Brandon Jacobs. They are in a lot better shape this year in my opinion.

Joe @ Gmen HQ:

The 49ers have a very balanced attack that works well for their QB.  They are still a bit week at WR for my tastes, but with everyone healthy they can certainly hold their own against most defenses.

2.) What 2011 playoff team has been most dissapoining & why?

Bruce @ Baltimore Beatdown:

It has to be the New Orleans Saints, who are a surprising 0-2 heading into Sunday’s home game vs. the Kansas City Chiefs.

Kevin @ HogsHaven:

The Patriots. They had a bad defense last year, and now their offense is sputtering. They’re all starting to look their age.

John @ Fanspeak:

New York Giants because they could be 0-2 easily after two home games.  Everyone will think the Saints first but I feel the Giants should have been 2-0 at this point.  (Answered before Thursday night’s game)

Parks @ Fanspeak, HogsHaven & LancersBlog:

The easy answer is the Saints. I don’t how if its the whole Sean Payton thing or what, but they just haven’t been impressive at all. People forget this team added a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball this offseason and those guys just haven’t shown up.

Joe @ Gmen HQ:

The answer to that is the Saints, but couldn’t you see that coming?  The defense is awful, and Drew Brees is maybe not as smart as everyone made him out to be.  Coaching still counts for something in this league and you can’t just plug a new guy in every other week and expect the team to perform.

3.) Who will win the AFC Championship rematch this Sunday?

Bruce @ Baltimore Beatdown:

The game is in Baltimore where the Ravens have not lost since the 2010 season. With revenge on their minds as well as frustration from their week 2 loss at the Eagles, they will take their anger out on Tom Brady and the Pats.

Kevin @ HogsHaven:

Never bet against the Ravens at home. (Regular season that is)

John @ Fanspeak:

I think that New England is going to go into Baltimore and win for some reason.  Everything says that the Ravens will win but just have a feeling they will lay an egg.  And this time they can’t drop it on Cundiff or Evans.

Parks @ Fanspeak, HogsHaven & LancersBlog:

The Ravens. I think they are pretty fired up and feel cheated from last week and the Patriots just didn’t look well last week.

Joe @ Gmen HQ:

The Patriots lost by their own hand.  they played sloppy and got lazy at the end.  The loss of Hernandez is bigger than some people think.  I think Baltimore steps up and gets the bad taste of last week out of their mouths.

4.) Will a team from non-SEC win National Championship this year?  If so, who?

Bruce @ Baltimore Beatdown:

Of course not! Expect Alabama to beat whomever challenges them, be it a team from outside the SEC or more likely, one of the other top teams in their conference.

Kevin @ HogsHaven:

I’m not so savvy with NCAA but it’s hard to imagine that happens. Alabama and LSU could probably hang with the Jaguars.

John @ Fanspeak:

No chance.  If Bama doesn’t win it’s gonna be LSU, if it’s not LSU it will be Georgia.  USC could get back into the mix but the SEC should petition the NFL to be the 9th division.

Parks @ Fanspeak, HogsHaven & LancersBlog:

Nope, we can talk about FSU, Oregon, and anyone else all we want but its the SECs world and we’re just living in it.

Joe @ Gmen HQ:

I doubt it, USC was exposed last week, and nobody else seems to be all that unbeatable this year.

5.) Will there be an NHL season? If so, when?

Bruce @ Baltimore Beatdown:

What? Who really cares, as the NHL is the least popular of the four major sports, and probably less so than NASCAR, MMA and the Lingerie Football League!

Kevin @ HogsHaven:

Yes…just like the NFL, there’s too much money to be lost without a season. It will come down to the last hour when finally people will cave. Why can’t they make the deadline in October? Season will start mid-January I’m guessing.

John @ Fanspeak:

Yes.  Everyone had doubts about the NFL and NBA lockouts but they worked it out.  Too much is at stake for the season to not be played.  I am already tired of going to khl.ru for hockey results.

Parks @ Fanspeak, HogsHaven & LancersBlog:

Yes, there is no way they can survive through this again. I think they are playing by December.

Joe @ Gmen HQ:

Eventually, but not till at least January, which is when most people start watching hockey anyway.
