Grading the Fanspeak Community Mock Draft – NFC

For the second part of the Fanspeak Community Mock Draft, I’m going to look at the NFC teams first as I analyze and give notes on each team. I don’t want to give letter grades for a couple of reasons. One I really thought every team did a nice job of helping their NFL Franchise, and secondly it’s tough to grade a draft right away.

Notes:

For a non-trade back scenario the Redskins did really good with this draft. Chase Young is a perennial Pro Bowler who should be a major difference maker on defense. He joins an already stacked Front 4, giving the Redskins perhaps the best defensive line in the league. Landing Wilson in the 3rd is a great value pick and gives them a talented young offensive tackle. At worst he could be the long term replacement for Morgan Moses starting in 2021, but the team should give him a shot at the open LT job. Bryant and Samuels both should push for significant roles as rookies with the potential to grow into starters in the future.

Notes:

Real big fan of this Lions draft class. Landing Okudah gives them a star corner to replace Slay with. Madubuike and Highsmith are both great value picks and could very well start on this team (particularly Madubuike). Muti is a couple rounds too high for me, I would have opted for a couple other interior OL, but he does fill a need. Claypool is one of my favorite receivers in the class, think he has the potential to be a star. Coming to Detroit with Golladay and Jones ahead of him, he can develop at his own pace. I also really like Blackmon and Benjamin for their value and upside where the Lions took them.

Notes:

Pretty impressive draft class from the Giants. They pass on Wirfs/Wills with the 4th pick, but that is pretty justifiable when you land a talent like Simmons. Simmons versatility and athleticism are off the charts, making him an impressive defensive weapon. New York still lands a very good offensive tackle in Cleveland in the 2nd round and follows that up with a good guard (who has some RT potential as well) in Robert Hunt in the 3rd. They add a big receivers in Bryan Edwards in the 4th, giving Jones yet another wepaon. Later in the draft I like the double edges and defensive depth they added.

Notes:

Really hitting all the needs with strong value picks here. Brown’s combine might scare some, but the guy is an impact interior defender, which is what the Panthers need. Igbinoghene, Brooks and Okwuegbunam all fill pressing needs due to free agent or retiring player losses. Lemieux and Garvin are nice 5th rd values who can contribute.

Notes:

Wills is the perfect 1st rd pick for the Cards as they have to protect Kyler Murray this year. Add in Hopkins (who is basically their 2nd round pick) and Murray has both the weapons and protection to shine this year. Weaver and Davis should both help contribute on the defensive side of the ball, though I do think this was a round or two early for Davis. I love the pick of Antonio Gibson, especially in an offensive system like this.

For not having a pick in the 2nd-4th rounds the 49ers did well here. Jeudy and Terrell are two very strong picks in the first round and I love seeing them add guys from big programs who should fit right in with the NFC Champs. Taylor is a project tackle who could eventually be Joe Staley’s replacement, while Collin Johnson and Pinkney give the 49ers more skill position talent depth.

Notes:

-Great draft for maximizing the Tom Brady era in Tampa. Becton gives him the LT protection that Brady is going to need, while Edwards-Helaire gives Tampa the starting RB they are missing. Don’t sleep on Joe Reed quickly becoming the number 3 or 4 WR on this team. I also like Eason as the QB of the future and great value in the 4th rd. Uche is a great edge passing rushing prospect, who will struggle some vs the run, but worth the investment here. Murchison and Jones are really nice value options here.

Notes:

Really strong class for the Falcons as they land the number 2 corner and a really good interior defender to place next to Grady Jarrett. They didn’t land an EDGE which is disappointing, but landing a pair of defensive starters was key. Grabbing two good interior offensive linemen, plus Hunter Bryant in the 3rd-4th round is smart as well. The Falcons line is a bit tenuous right now and needs the reinforcement, while Bryant can help replace the loss of Austin Hooper.

Notes:

Another really nice draft class. The Cowboys had a number of free agent defections this year, so I like the defensive heavy approach. Fulton and Dugger should both be good starters and Davis at worst is a significant contributor along the defensive line. Gabriel Davis is a receiver with some upside and can help add another weapon on this offense. Tuszka and Watkins are solid later round picks.

While I like the Eagles draft overall, and I can somewhat understand grabbing two receivers, I don’t think I’d grab them back-to-back in the first two rounds. Particularly Jefferson and Hamler, who both project the best in the slot. I really like both players and I think overall this helps the team, but I don’t know if the value was maximized here if you rarely see both on the field together (even going forward). The rest of this draft class are guys that I like and generally at spots where I think they are good value. Phillip is an under the radar LB and Hand is a guy I could see eventually being a starter.

Notes:

I really like Herbert and think this is a great value, but not sure I see the fit here as Cousins is pretty locked into this job with the new contract. I don’t see Cousins going anywhere for the next 3 seasons, so best case is you have Herbert under contract for 2 years (one of which is at market value). I do like Gross-Matos as a way to help keep the defense strong. Dantzler, Holmes and Strowbridge should all help as well (love the double corners here). Tyler Johnson is a solid WR prospect and there is starting upside, I just don’t see him as a great value in Rd 2. I also think the Vikings should have looked to add a pair of WRs in this draft class. I like a lot of the depth picks late, as well, and picking up Harris as a solid center prospect. Overall I think this is a strong draft, but a bit of a waste of the top pick without knowing the real plan here.

Notes:

Saints don’t have a lot of picks, but they make the most of them. Queen is a high upside athletic linebacker who should start as a rookie. He really can help their coverage of TEs and backs (something that is key vs the Panthers and Bucs). Jefferson and Hill are two solid mid-round receivers who are both strong route runners that should be able to find significant roles as rookies. Brees should like both as options behind Michael Thomas. Fromm is a solid value developmental QB, and Lamar Jackson is a decent corner prospect (particularly that late in the draft).

Seattle loads up on defense here with Epenesa, Gallimore and Chinn all guys who can start and make an impact as rookies. Epenesa and Gallimore both add a lot of disruptive ability to the front 4. Akers is a good back to add to the mix and a nice value pick. Really like the value of the Anfernee Jennings selection as well. He’s not flashy, but he’s a leader and produces. Should be a solid back-up at worst.

Notes:

This is a great draft for the Packers as they try to get back over the hump into the Super Bowl. Mims is exactly the big play weapon that Rodgers needs added to this offense. Davante Adams is a star receiver, but he can’t do it alone. Now with Mims they have some options, and if he can gel quickly with Rodgers this passing attack could be really dangerous. Davis and Elliott are two nice additions to an already impressive defense. I think Elliott will have a real shot of being a day 1 starter. Davis is probably not a starter as a rookie given how deep the Packers secondary is, but he should play a lot and contribute quite a bit in nickel/dime packages. Driscoll, Bandy, Robinson, Coughlin are all guys I like for depth and present nice values as well. James Morgan is a decent late rd QB option to develop as well. For a late pick in the draft and no additional picks in the top 4 rounds, the Packers did great here.

Notes:

The Bears are obviously limited without a first rounder, but they do hit pretty big with their pair of 2nd round picks. Reagor and Cushenberry are both strong values and guys who can start as needed. What really hurts this Bears draft is the lack of a 3rd and 4th round pick. Bassey and Reed might be solid depth secondary layers and Perine and Herron can be depth on offense, but this draft class isn’t likely going to produce much beyond the two 2nd round picks. If those fail this class will be really weak.

This mock was done before the Brandin Cooks trade so there is another late 2nd round the Rams will have. That will definitely help, but I do think the Rams did okay in this mock. Jackson is a bit rich for me in the 2nd, but OL help is desperately needed. Burgess and Zuniga are guys who will push for starting roles or significant roles as rookies. Evan Weaver could struggle in coverage, but he’s an excellent run defender, which isn’t terrible in a division with the 49ers and Seahawks.
