Grading the Fanspeak Community 7 Round Mock Draft- AFC

NFL Draft

For the first part of the Fanspeak Community Mock Draft, I’m going to look at the AFC teams first as I analyze and give notes on each team. I don’t want to give letter grades for a couple of reasons. One I really thought every team did a nice job of helping their NFL Franchise, and secondly it’s tough to grade a draft right away.

CIN
Joe Burrow – QB, LSU"}” data-sheets-formula=”=ArrayFormula("Rd: " & index(R4C1:R258C1,MATCH(small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16),R4C2:R258C2,0)) & ", Pick: " & small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16) & ", " & index(R4C4:R258C4,MATCH(small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16),R4C2:R258C2,0)))”>Rd: 1, Pick: 1, Joe Burrow – QB, LSU
Rd: 2, Pick: 33, Grant Delpit – S, LSU
Rd: 3, Pick: 65, Akeem Davis-Gaither – LB, Appalachian State
Rd: 4, Pick: 107, Damien Lewis – IOL, LSU
Rd: 5, Pick: 147, Alton Robinson – EDGE, Syracuse
Rd: 6, Pick: 180, Quintez Cephus – WR, Wisconsin
Rd: 7, Pick: 215, Mohamed Barry – LB, Nebraska

Notes:

Big fan of what the Bengals did here. Drafting Burrow is the easy part, but adding Delpit and Davis-Gaither, gives the team a pair of young athletic defenders to help the back seven of the defense. I feel like both will start fairly quickly and have pretty strong long term upside. Damien Lewis is another player who could push for a starting role early, given how thin Cincy is inside. I also see Alton Robinson contributing in a situational role early in his career. This is exactly the type of draft the Bengals could use to jump start their fortunes.

MIA
Tua Tagovailoa – QB, Alabama"}” data-sheets-formula=”=ArrayFormula("Rd: " & index(R4C1:R258C1,MATCH(small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16),R4C2:R258C2,0)) & ", Pick: " & small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16) & ", " & index(R4C4:R258C4,MATCH(small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16),R4C2:R258C2,0)))”>Rd: 1, Pick: 5, Tua Tagovailoa – QB, Alabama

Rd: 3, Pick: 70, Ben Bartch – OT, St. John
Rd: 4, Pick: 141, James Lynch – IDL, Baylor
Rd: 5, Pick: 153, Devin Asiasi – TE, UCLA
Rd: 5, Pick: 154, Jarvaris Davis – CB, Auburn
Rd: 5, Pick: 173, Benito Jones – IDL, Ole Miss
Rd: 6, Pick: 185, Keith Ismael – IOL, San Diego State
Rd: 7, Pick: 227, Reggie Robinson II – CB, Tulsa
Rd: 7, Pick: 246, Kalija Lipscomb – WR, Vanderbilt
Rd: 7, Pick: 251, Khaleke Hudson – S, Michigan

Notes:

I’m going to break this up into three sections: 1st round, 2nd & 3rd, and Day 3 picks. For the first round landing Tua Tagovailoa, and Xavier McKinney from Alabama and K’Lavon Chaisson from LSU, gives Miami three guys who have been leaders on elite championship caliber teams. If Tua’s health doesn’t become an issue, the Dolphins just landed their franchise QB. Chaisson and McKinney add two instant, high-upside starters on defense.

In the 2nd and 3rd round the Dolphins went back to the offensive side adding a pair of offensive tackles and one of the top running backs. Swift should have a clear shot at starting in Miami and he can be a valuable playmaker, while taking pressure off of Tua. I’m a fan of Niang’s and think he can be a starter, but I felt there were better OTs available and those who are more likely to start Day 1. I’m still okay with the pick, just felt they could have have had a bit more value. I do like adding Bartch as an insurance policy. He could perhaps shift inside to guard or be an option at RT, but if for some reason Niang fails, Bartch has LT upside.

Really liked the value they hit on through the rest of this draft. Lynch, Asiasi, and Jones should all contribute as rookies. Ismael, Davis and Robinson have some intriguing upside as well.

LAC
Rd: 1, Pick: 6, Jordan Love – QB, Utah State
Rd: 2, Pick: 37, Matthew Peart – OT, UConn
Rd: 3, Pick: 71, Willie Gay Jr. – LB, Mississippi State
Devin Duvernay – WR, Texas"}” data-sheets-formula=”=ArrayFormula("Rd: " & index(R4C1:R258C1,MATCH(small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16),R4C2:R258C2,0)) & ", Pick: " & small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16) & ", " & index(R4C4:R258C4,MATCH(small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16),R4C2:R258C2,0)))”>Rd: 4, Pick: 112, Devin Duvernay – WR, Texas
Rd: 5, Pick: 151, Lynn Bowden – WR, Kentucky
Rd: 6, Pick: 186, Darrynton Evans – RB, Appalachian State
Rd: 7, Pick: 220, Colby Parkinson – TE, Stanford

Notes:

This was a bit of risky draft for the Chargers, but it easily could pay off for them. Love has the upside to be a franchise QB, but passing on Herbert is risky. Peart is a guy I really like, but top of the 2nd is rich for me. There were 3-4 OTs that I would rather have, that were still on the board. Now Peart has the upside and profile to be a good starting LT, so this could have been the right call, just a bit risky. I did like the rest of the this draft class though. Gay could start or be a significant contributor and Duvernay and Bowden are nice weapons to have behind Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. Also don’t sleep on Darrynton Evans being a strong complement to Ekler.

JAX
Rd: 1, Pick: 9, Javon Kinlaw – IDL, South Carolina
Rd: 1, Pick: 20, Josh Jones – OT, Houston
Rd: 2, Pick: 42, Damon Arnette – CB, Ohio State
Rd: 3, Pick: 73, Logan Stenberg – IOL, Kentucky
Rd: 4, Pick: 116, Kenny Willekes – EDGE, Michigan State
Rd: 4, Pick: 137, Quartney Davis – WR, Texas A&M
Rd: 4, Pick: 140, Shaquille Quarterman – LB, Miami
Rd: 5, Pick: 157, Tanner Muse – S, Clemson
Rd: 5, Pick: 165, Dezmon Patmon – WR, Washington State
Rd: 6, Pick: 189, Sewo Olonilua – RB, TCU
Rd: 6, Pick: 206, Tyler Huntley – QB, Utah
Rd: 7, Pick: 223, Adrian Killins Jr. – RB, UCF

Notes:

Another team who used their depth of draft picks really well. Kinlaw and Jones are both really good picks and instant upgrades for Jacksonville. Kinlaw especially has the tools to be special. Arnette isn’t going to make Jags fans forget Ramsey, but he should be a good starter. Stenberg and Willekes are two others who I see having significant roles going forward. Later the Jags hit on a lot of good solid depth guys to help reshape this roster.

CLE
Rd: 1, Pick: 10, Andrew Thomas – OT, Georgia
Rd: 2, Pick: 41, Antoine Winfield Jr. – S, Minnesota
Rd: 3, Pick: 74, Troy Dye – LB, Oregon
Rd: 3, Pick: 97, Khalid Kareem – EDGE, Notre Dame
Rd: 4, Pick: 115, Antonio Gandy-Golden – WR, Liberty
Rd: 6, Pick: 187, Michael Onwenu – IOL, Michigan
Rd: 7, Pick: 244, Cole McDonald – QB, Hawaii

Notes:

This is quite possibly the perfect draft for the Browns needs. Thomas fills the huge left tackle void, and he should pair nicely with Jack Conklin. With the Browns offensive line adding two major additions, this offense has the chance to be really special. They have talent and depth at RB, TE and now receiver with adding AGG in the 4th round. Love the defensive focus in the 2nd and 3rd rounds as all three should play and contribute with Winfield being a good starter.

NYJ
Rd: 1, Pick: 11, Tristan Wirfs – OT, Iowa
Brandon Aiyuk – WR, Arizona State"}” data-sheets-formula=”=ArrayFormula("Rd: " & index(R4C1:R258C1,MATCH(small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16),R4C2:R258C2,0)) & ", Pick: " & small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16) & ", " & index(R4C4:R258C4,MATCH(small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16),R4C2:R258C2,0)))”>Rd: 2, Pick: 48, Brandon Aiyuk – WR, Arizona State
Donovan Peoples-Jones – WR, Michigan"}” data-sheets-formula=”=ArrayFormula("Rd: " & index(R4C1:R258C1,MATCH(small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16),R4C2:R258C2,0)) & ", Pick: " & small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16) & ", " & index(R4C4:R258C4,MATCH(small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16),R4C2:R258C2,0)))”>Rd: 3, Pick: 68, Donovan Peoples-Jones – WR, Michigan
Rd: 3, Pick: 79, Bradlee Anae – EDGE, Utah
Rd: 4, Pick: 120, Saahdiq Charles – OT, LSU
Rd: 5, Pick: 158, Nevelle Clarke – CB, UCF
Rd: 6, Pick: 191, Jalen Elliott – S, Notre Dame
Rd: 6, Pick: 211, Darryl Williams – IOL, Mississippi State

Notes:

Wirfs is my number 1 offensive tackle so landing him at 11 is big. He and Charles who was taken in the 4th (and great value there), gives the Jets a pair of young tackles to protect Sam Darnold with. Wirfs has the chance to be a franchise All-Pro quality tackle. I really like the Aiyuk and Anae picks as well as they both fill big needs for the Jets. I’m not as high on Donovan Peoples-Jones, as I felt like there were other WRs that they could have taken there. I also think DPJ is more raw and needs to be in a situation where he is working behind veteran receivers and with a veteran QB. That isn’t the case here and I worry that could push him to a larger role before he’s ready. Still overall this is a really strong draft for the Jets.

LV
CeeDee Lamb – WR, Oklahoma"}” data-sheets-formula=”=ArrayFormula("Rd: " & index(R4C1:R258C1,MATCH(small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16),R4C2:R258C2,0)) & ", Pick: " & small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16) & ", " & index(R4C4:R258C4,MATCH(small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16),R4C2:R258C2,0)))”>Rd: 1, Pick: 12, CeeDee Lamb – WR, Oklahoma
Rd: 1, Pick: 19, Jeff Gladney – CB, TCU
Rd: 3, Pick: 80, Troy Pride Jr. – CB, Notre Dame
Rd: 3, Pick: 81, Jonathan Greenard – EDGE, Florida
Rd: 3, Pick: 91, Solomon Kindley – IOL, Georgia
Rd: 4, Pick: 121, Joe Bachie Jr. – LB, Michigan State
Rd: 5, Pick: 159, Joshua Kelley – RB, UCLA

Notes:

I really like the top 4 picks of this draft. Lamb gives the Raiders their number 1 receiver, and a guy for opposing defenses to fear. This should not only help Carr, but the entire offense be more effective. I like grabbing Gladney and Pride, as corner back is a concern area for the Raiders. Greenard gives the Raiders a nice mid-round edge rusher. He won’t start for them, but he should be able to significantly contribute. I’m not as high on Kindley in the top 100, so I would have liked to have seen another pick there. Overall though this is a solid class.

DEN

Rd: 4, Pick: 118, John Hightower – WR, Boise State
A.J. Green – CB, Oklahoma State"}” data-sheets-formula=”=ArrayFormula("Rd: " & index(R4C1:R258C1,MATCH(small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16),R4C2:R258C2,0)) & ", Pick: " & small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16) & ", " & index(R4C4:R258C4,MATCH(small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16),R4C2:R258C2,0)))”>Rd: 5, Pick: 178, A.J. Rd: 7, Pick: 252, Trystan Colon-Casillo – OL, Missouri
Rd: 7, Pick: 254, T.J. Brunson – LB, South Carolina

Notes:

This is among the better drafts for me from a balance of value vs needs. Ruggs is a major weapon addition on the outside who should pair nicely with Courtland Sutton. Add in Fant at TE, and Denver has three big play weapons for QB Drew Lock. Austin Jackson also should help Lock as, hopefully that will help lead to some stable protection up front. Fotu helps rebuild the defensive line, and should be a stout NT in the middle. Logan Wilson is great value and should push for a starting role as a rookie. Taylor gives them depth along the edge which is smart with Chubb coming off a major injury and Von Miller getting up there in age. The Broncos had great EDGE starters, but little depth. Hightower, Green and Frantz are all nice depth picks who are nice value for their spots as well.

Rd: 7, Pick: 241, Dalton Keene – TE, Virginia Tech

Notes:

This draft was a little underwhelming for me, and I think shows that while the Patriots have a lot of picks, most of them are late and unlikely to really help the rebuild. I like Kenneth Murray and it’s a reasonable need, but I think I would have focused on some more pressing needs at 23. With some of the receivers or edge players available I probably would have gone in that direction. I’m not a huge fan of the 3rd round either. Hamilton and Lawrence are a bit of overkill to the DL, and neither are guys who I thought fell and offered big value. Moss is not the TE I would want that early. I think he maxes as more of a number 2 TE/FB and that really isn’t what the Patriots are looking for. I think in the late rounds there are a number of interesting depth guys, but no one who really stands out. To me I think this shows on draft day the Patriots should be more aggressive to add impact players, and maybe a QB for the future.

Dillon – RB, Boston College
Rd: 5, Pick: 170, James Proche – WR, SMU
Rd: 7, Pick: 225, Oluwole Betiku Jr. – EDGE, Illinois

Notes:

This is a great draft class for a team that doesn’t have a lot of needs. Ruiz and Bredeson are two good picks to help replace Marshall Yanda and add depth to a thin interior offensive line. Pittman is a perfect fit at WR for this team. He can be a consistent chain mover while Brown and Boykin offer big play upside. Hopkins is a nice value and helps replace the depth lost by trading away Hayden Hurst. Dillon and Proche offer additional depth that can contribute if needed.

TEN
Rd: 1, Pick: 29, Zack Baun – EDGE, Wisconsin
Rd: 2, Pick: 61, Prince Tega Wanogho – OT, Auburn
Rd: 3, Pick: 93, Bryce Hall – CB, Virginia
Rd: 5, Pick: 174, Zack Moss – RB, Utah
Rd: 7, Pick: 224, Dane Jackson – CB, Pittsburgh
Rd: 7, Pick: 243, Malcolm Roach – DL, Texas

Notes:

I really feel like the Titans did a nice job extracting value without having extra selections or high picks. Baun is a good all-around defender who can help as an off-ball LB, as well as a pass rusher. He and Hall should both help add value to an already strong defense. Prince Tega Wanogho helps replace Conklin along the Titans offensive line. Moss is a nice Day 3 value who can back-up Derrick Henry. Jackson and Roach are nice defensive depth picks as well.

KC
Rd: 1, Pick: 32, Trevon Diggs – CB, Alabama
Rd: 2, Pick: 63, Matt Hennessy – IOL, Temple
Rd: 3, Pick: 96, Geno Stone – S, Iowa
Rd: 4, Pick: 138, David Woodward – LB, Utah State
Rd: 5, Pick: 177, Davion Taylor – LB, Colorado

Notes:

I like adding Diggs and Hennessy to help shore up two of the weaker areas for the Chiefs. Both should be starters as rookies and help keep the Super Bowl champs at full strength. The 3rd round is a bit rich for Geno Stone, but I think he, Woodward and Taylor all have nice depth value.

Rd: 5, Pick: 160, Calvin Throckmorton – OT, Oregon
Rd: 6, Pick: 193, Antoine Brooks Jr. – S, Maryland
Rd: 6, Pick: 197, Aaron Fuller – WR, Washington

Notes:

I love adding Higgins and Kmet to this Colts squad. Indianapolis made a big move adding Philip Rivers in free agency so putting weapons around him to get the most out of him is key. Higgins especially is a guy with a safe floor who should make an immediate impact. Terrell Lewis is a nice value pick in the 3rd adding to the the Colts pass rush depth. Gordon can be a developmental QB behind Rivers and Brissett. Throckmorton and Brooks are nice depth picks who can contribute in the future.

Rd: 7, Pick: 250, Kindle Vildor – CB, Georgia Southern

Notes:

This mock was done before the Brandin Cooks trade so I will only look at the remaining picks. Johnson and Hodgins are solid adds, though now Hodgins is less of a need. I like Trautman’s value at this spot, but not sure the Texans needed to add two TEs. Runyan and Vildor are two really good 7th round values. Vildor especially is a nice sleeper.

Rd: 4, Pick: 135, Hakeem Adeniji – OT, Kansas
Rd: 6, Pick: 198, Kyle Murphy – IOL, Rhode Island
Rd: 7, Pick: 232, Garrett Marino – IDL, UAB

Notes:

For not having their natural 1st and 3rd round picks, the Steelers did pretty well here. Marlon Davidson is a good defensive line prospect, he doesn’t perfectly fill the Javon Hargrave role, but he adds another strong piece along this line. Dobbins is a total steal at 102 and pairs with James Conner to give the Steelers an incredible 1-2 punch at RB. Hurts is a solid QB to develop for the future and this situation allows him to have some time to develop. Adding a couple solid young offensive linemen in Adeniji and Murphy Day 3 is nice as well.

BUF

Jonathan Taylor – RB, Wisconsin"}” data-sheets-formula=”=ArrayFormula("Rd: " & index(R4C1:R258C1,MATCH(small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16),R4C2:R258C2,0)) & ", Pick: " & small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16) & ", " & index(R4C4:R258C4,MATCH(small(if(R4C3:R258C3=R3C[0],R4C2:R258C2,"N/A"),R[0]C16),R4C2:R258C2,0)))”>Rd: 3, Pick: 86, Jonathan Taylor – RB, Wisconsin

Rd: 5, Pick: 167, D.J. Wonnum – EDGE, South Carolina
Rd: 6, Pick: 188, Braden Mann – P, Texas A&M
Rd: 6, Pick: 207, McTelvin Agim – IDL, Arkansas
Rd: 7, Pick: 239, Jordan Fuller – S, Ohio State

Notes:

Another team without their 1st round pick that does a nice job with this draft class. Shenault Jr. isn’t a need with Stefon Diggs now on the roster, but he does add some youth, upside and size to this receiving corps. Taylor is a complete steal at this point in the draft and a nice back to pair with Devin Singletary. Taylor and Shenault together really make the Bills offense one of the best overall skill groups in the league. Ojemudia is a nice 4th round pick, who should push for a contributing role as a rookie. Agim and Fuller are two nice late round sleepers that I like.
