Miami Dolphins 7 Round Mock Draft using Senior Bowl Prospects

Using On the Clock Mock Draft Simulator I decided to take a look at a 7 round Mock Draft for the Dolphins. Given that it’s Senior Bowl week I decided to only select prospects who have been showcasing themselves to scouts this week. So while there might have been times I would have preferred another prospect I was building this under certain parameters. Keep that in mind while giving feedback to this mock.

18:  DL JAVON KINLAW, SOUTH CAROLINA

-This is a great value pick as Kinlaw is strongly in consideration for a top 15 selection. Kinlaw would pair with last year’s 1st round pick Christian Wilkins to give Miami a pair of star interior defensive linemen. He will also help improve a pass rush that managed just 23 sacks a year ago.

26:  OT JOSH JONES, HOUSTON

-The Dolphins traded away Laremy Tunsil prior to the season and they desperately need to add offensive line help. Miami gave up 58 sacks a year ago and now has to protect a Franchise QB in Herbert. Jones has had a good week of practice and looks like a quality day 1 starter.

39:  LB ZACK BAUN, WISCONSIN

-Baun fits the Dolphins 3-4 base scheme and gives Miami an edge player who can win with speed and athletic ability. The Dolphins top returning edge player had 3.5 sacks, so this is a major need area. Baun has played well this week, showing a mix of pass rush ability and some coverage skills when he’s lined up at LB. He’s not the best option at the point of attack to defend the run, but that matters little if he can be a double-digit sack guy for the Dolphins.

56:  G JOHN SIMPSON, CLEMSON

-As mentioned before the Dolphins offensive line is a major question mark. Simpson is coming off an All-American campaign and has displayed good power this week. He gets physical in the run game and holds up well as a pass protector. Jones plus Simpson should equal two starters for the Dolphins OL.

70:  EDGE JOSH UCHE, MICHIGAN

-Edge rushers are needed in Miami and Uche is another good fit for their 3-4 style of defense. He’s another guy who wins with speed and uses it to create havoc in the backfield. He’s slightly undersized, but should have no issue being an effective pass rusher at the next level. He might be the type of play who you pair with a another defender versus the run, but he’s still good value at this spot.

142:  WR VAN JEFFERSON, FLORIDA

-Jefferson had an incredible week of practice, showcasing his speed, route running and hands. It’s possible that he’s off the board at this point, but with such a deep receiver group he could slide a bit. He was never highly productive at Florida, which was why he was considered a 4th-5th round guy before the week of practice. If he’s on the board this is a good pick.

162:  S JEREMY CHINN, SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

-Chinn was one of the many small school guys who really showcased their talents this week in practice. He’s a big physical safety, who runs like a corner and covers like one as well. He was matching with receivers in 1-on-1 drills with little issue. Chinn probably needs a year or two to develop, but he could have some starting potential. At worst he should be a quality back-up and ace special teamer.

173:  RB JOSHUA KELLEY, UCLA

-In reality the Dolphins could look to address their RB needs earlier in the draft, but if they are waiting this late Kelley is a solid option. He had a really good week catching the football and showed a lot of speed and agility. He could be in the mix for 3rd down duties as a rookie.

185: WR JAMES PROCHE, SMU

-Proche would give the Dolphins another depth wide receiver and a guy who could probably play in the slot if you needed as a rookie. His upside is limited, but he’s solid with really good hands.

197:  CB KINDLE VILDOR, GEORGIA SOUTHERN

-Vildor has been really impressive down at the Senior Bowl this week. He’s very aggressive and doesn’t back down from receivers that have 4-5″ on him. He’s pretty raw overall, but he’s got some developmental upside. He should contribute on special teams as a rookie.

202:  S BRIAN COLE II, MISSISSIPPI STATE

-Cole had a bit of a non-descript week (but we are running out of Senior Bowl players), but he’s a guy who is still learning the position. He only started 1 year at Mississippi State at safety, after transferring from Michigan where he was recruited as a receiver. He’s probably a guy targeted for the practice squad, but he’s got nice size and has a strong special teams back-ground.

245:  OT CHARLIE HECK, NORTH CAROLINA

-Heck had an up-and-down week, but it looks like he could be a depth offensive tackle at the next level. For a 7th round pick that is fair value.
