Scouting Reports: WR Corey Davis

NFL Draft Scouting Reports

WR Corey Davis, Western Michigan

6’3”, 209 lbs.

  • Dominated the MAC conference for four years amassing 331 catches, 5,278 yards and 52 TDs in that time.
  • Excellent height, weight, speed, has the potential to be a complete receiver.
  • Really good deep ball receiver, does a nice job getting vertical and getting behind the defense. Finishes the catch with good tracking skills.
  • Wins a number of jump catches and shows an impressive catch radius.
  • Good route runner, who gets out of his breaks quickly helping to create separation.
  • Major red zone weapon, who offers a big target for quarterbacks to throw to.

  • Was clearly far more talented than his level of competition, which helped boost his stats considerably.
  • Rarely faced physical corners or guys who could match him size wise, it makes it tougher to judge how quickly he can adjust.
  • Drops were an issue from at times in college.

Davis is a really good receiving prospect that has size, speed and quickness that allows him to win in any area of the field. He has number 1 receiver upside, and is well worth a top 20 pick in the draft.

While there is little to knock with Davis, his level of competition does give some reason for pause. Will he be nearly as effective when seeing a big jump in the level of talent that he is facing? Also if he still can be effective, will he have a longer road to becoming a successful starter, to the point that it might be 2-3 years before he makes a major impact?

In the overall picture those concerns are fairly minor as Davis has all the tools to be successful and even if it takes him an extra year to develop it doesn’t change his value too much. I do think it can bump him below Mike Williams in a head-to-head contest as the top receiver in the class, but really they are so close that if feels like a toss-up decision.
