Ranking the Senior Bowl prospects by position:
Here is my top five Senior Bowl prospects (top 3 for QB, RB and TE) by position based on the weeks that they had down here in mobile:
*Note this is not where they rank overall, just how they preformed in practice this week
Quarterbacks:
- Carson Wentz
- Cody Kessler
- Dak Prescott
-Honestly this list could have read Wentz at number 1, and blanks for number 2 and 3. None of the other 7 quarterbacks really showed anything special, or big time upside. That’s not to say they were all terrible and don’t deserve to be drafted, but just that they were highly inconsistent. Wentz had a really strong week, and checked every box for teams. Kessler lacks a big time arm, but he was fairly solid throughout the week. Prescott has a little potential, but he was too inconsistent to warrant more than a 4th or 5th rounder on.
Running backs:
- Kenneth Dixon
- Jonathan Williams
- Aaron Green
-This was a fairly middle of the pack type of year for the running backs. There is some situational talent with the group, but few of these backs look like they could be fulltime starters. The only two that really could potentially be starters are Dixon and Williams, and both had pretty solid weeks. Dixon could crack the top 100 and if Williams continues to shine during the process he could move up as well.
Tight Ends:
- Nick Vannett
- Jerell Adams
- Bryce Williams
-This is a weak year for tight end overall so there wasn’t a ton of talent down here this year, but Vannett really stood out. The OSU product could end up being the 3rd TE taken and should go somewhere in the 3rd-4th round. He has the potential to be an every down TE and can definitely help a team as an inline option. Adams and Williams both flashed at times, but they were very inconsistent throughout the week. They did both measure in well, so expect teams to have some mid-to-late round interest if they test well at the combine.
Wide Receivers:
- Braxton Miller
- Sterling Shepard
- Jordan Payton
- Jay Lee
- Charone Peake
-Miller was definitely the talk of the Senior Bowl after a huge week where he was at times uncoverable. He still has some work to do in some areas, but he clearly was the number one receiver of the week and really helped his case down here in Mobile. Shepard also had a big week that helped his draft stock, and he was the clear number two receiver behind Miller. There was a bit of a drop off after the top two, but Payton, Lee and Peake all showed some positives for scouts and helped their stock.
Offensive tackles:
- Jason Spriggs
- Kyle Murphy
- Cole Toner
- Spencer Drango
- Le’Raven Clark
-Another position group with a pretty big gap between the top option and the rest. Spriggs had a really strong week overall and showed that he can be a LT at the next level. He should be a top 50 lock at this point and has a good chance of going in the first round. Murphy was a solid this week and could be considered by teams as a guy who can start at RT early in his career. Toner had a nice week and exceeded expectations, but he might actually be a better fit at guard at the next level. Drango probably should already be considered a guard. He struggled some at OT, but he should be better inside. Clark was okay at times, but this should have been a better event for him.
Guards/Centers:
- Cody Whitehair
- Jack Allen
- Nick Martin
- Josh Garnett
- Sebastian Tretola
-Whitehair had a huge week and was the best overall offensive lineman at this event. While the other interior linemen had good weeks, there was a clear gap between them and Whitehair. Allen and Martin both look like starting caliber centers at the next level and should go somewhere in the late 2nd-to-early 3rd round. Garnett was a bit inconsistent at times, but he showed starting potential and a lot of power. Speaking of power, Tretola was really good throughout the week with his run blocking. His pass blocking was a bit more inconsistent, but he’s another potential starting guard down the road.
Defensive Ends:
- Noah Spence
- Jihad Ward
- Sheldon Day
- Bronson Kaufusi
- Carl Nassib
-This was one of the better overall position groups. Noah Spence was putting on a pass rushing clinic all week and was a nightmare for opposing OT’s to block given his speed and burst off the line. Ward came in as more of a mid-round prospect, but he was fantastic this week living in the offensive backfield. Day came in listed as a DT, but he spent much of the week lining up at DE and showed he could do some damage from that position. Day has one of the best motors you will find and is a natural pass rusher. Kaufusi had a pretty decent week, but he was overshadowed by elite performances. Nassib was probably quieter this week than you’d like to see. He had his share of good reps, but many of those came against some of the weaker OL on the roster.
Defensive Tackles:
- Sheldon Rankins
- Vernon Butler
- Jarran Reed
- Austin Johnson
- Tie- Adolphus Washington/Matt Ioannidis
-This was hands down the best group of Senior Bowl week. I couldn’t pick just 5 guys and that is even with me moving Day to the DE group. Rankins and Butler had just fantastic weeks and both should really see their stock climb. Reed and Johnson were both really good as well, but they were clearly a bit behind Rankins and Butler. Washington had a got better with each practice session, and had a good week overall. Given so many other talented DL, he might not have moved up too much, but he’s a 3rd round caliber talent. Ioannidis was a bit of a surprise this week as he looked like more of mid-to-late round talent, but he was very impressive thoughout the week. He doesn’t have as much natural talent as some of the other players, but he still made some big plays.
Linebackers:
- Kyler Fackrell
- Tyler Matakevich
- Kentrell Brothers
- Reggie Ragland
- Blake Martinez
-Overall this group was solid but unspectacular. Fackrell held his own in coverage and had some strong pass rush reps, but he didn’t do anything amazing. In fairness to him he was playing primarily out of position and didn’t have the same number of reps rushing the passer that the DE’s and DT’s got. Matakevich and Brothers both had solid-to-good weeks, that should have helped them. Ragland was a bit disappointing as he came in overweight and he seemed to lack some burst in pursuit. He’s still really good versus the run, but he was lacking in some other areas. Blake Martinez was okay on defense, but he was a vocal leader and at worst should be a special teams star.
Cornerbacks:
- Jalen Mills
- Harlan Miller
- Deiondre Hall
- Kevin Peterson
- Maurice Canady
-The corner group was pretty solid all week. Mills and Miller looked to be the best of the bunch, routinely blanketing their assignment or at worst able to recover and limit any YAC opportunities. Hall had a pretty good week as well. He’s a big, physical corner, who can excel with press teams. Peterson is a smaller corner, but is very smooth in his breaks and plays with great technique. Canady got better as the week wore on, and is another big corner who in the right system can use his size to his advantage.
Safeties:
- Darian Thompson
- Jeremy Cash
- Kevin Byard
- Tyvis Powell
- Sean Davis
-Darian Thompson was clearly the top safety of the week and it wasn’t that close, especially with what teams are looking for in their free safeties. Thompson has fantastic range and he was all over the field making plays. Given the lack of options for the position Thompson could even crack the first round come April. Cash is a big, physical in the box safety, who lacks some range, but in the right system he can be really effective. Byard and Powell both flashed throughout the week, but they are more likely back-up caliber safeties. Davis didn’t really ‘wow’ this week, but he didn’t hurt himself either. He played both corner and safety in school and his versatility can help him at the next level.
