2015 NFL Draft: Best Undrafted Free Agents to Target

We’re getting this article out as quickly as possible, because we know that NFL GM’s move fast to sign the best undrafted players after the Draft concludes to round out their roster. Some of these guys had 6th or 7th round grades with teams, but just didn’t hear their name called. And if you look to the past, you see that some of these players can become future NFL stars.  Tony Romo, Victor Cruz, Wes Welker and Arian Foster to name a few. So it is something worth following.

The biggest story to follow though is obviously T/G La’el Collins of LSU. Everyone probably knows the story at this point, but the question is what will happen now that he has not been drafted. Per the NFL guidelines, an undrafted player cannot re-enter the NFL Draft the following year, as he had planned. So it will be interesting to watch which teams go after him, which team he signs with or if he puts up a fight with the NFL in general.

Here is our list of top Undrafted Free Agents teams should target not named La’el Collins:

S Cody Prewitt – Mississippi:

-Prewitt can help at FS, SS and even on special teams. He has good size despite it not always playing up, but his best asset are his plus instincts. He’s a guy who should definitely make a roster and down the road may develop into a starter.

S Kurtis Drummond – Michigan State

-Drummond is a big safety with range and ball skills, but he’s inconsistent. His instincts are poor at times and it can lead to him caught out of position. Still at that size, with that range there is a lot to like and enough to make you believe you can coach him up.

S Anthony Harris – Virginia

-Harris is a little light for a safety, but he was a highly productive multi-year starter who showed well as both a box or cover safety. He is a guy who can help on special teams and has down the road starting potential. To get him as a UDFA is tremendous value.

S Ladarius Gunter – Miami

-Gunter was primarily a corner at Miami, but with his slow 40 time he looks like he will be more of a safety at the next level. Despite poor timed speed, Gunter held his own at the Senior Bowl on vertical routes and showed good cover ability.

CB Justin Coleman – Tennessee 

-Coleman had a strong East/West Shrine week and is a very athletically gifted player. He lacks refinement with technique, but he should project as a slot corner with special teams ability.

C Reese Dismukes –  Auburn

-Considered one of the better centers in the draft all year, Dismukes is an undersized center who fits well in a zone scheme. Though he lacks power, he stays with his blocks and does a really nice job on the move.

G Josue Matias – Florida State 

-Tweener guy who could project at tackle or guard, 3 year starter at FSU and played at a high level. Inconsistent at times, but he’s a young prospect and could be a good long term project.

C B.J. Finney – Kansas State

-4 year starter who plays with a nice power base, he’s not athletic so probably not a fit for zone schemes. Though his upside is limited he could end up being a solid starter and is definitely worth a look.

DT Joey Mbu – Houston

-Big physical defensive tackle who is a capable run defender. He could line up at the nose or even as a 5 tech as a solid run stopper. He’s not a great pass rusher, but plays with high effort.

CB Jacoby Glenn – UCF

-Excellent ball and cover skills, with good height. Limited athlete though which probably kept him down draft boards.

DT Xavier Williams – Northern Iowa

-Big defensive tackle who plays with a high motor and is quick off the snap. Showed well at the East/West Shrine Game, and should be a good bet to make an NFL roster.

ILB Mike Hull – Penn State

-Smart inside backer (or outside in the 4-3), who makes a lot of plays in run support.

OLB Zack Hodges –  Harvard

-Edge rusher from the Ivy league, who used speed to beat his competition. Needs more refinement, but held his own at the Senior Bowl.

CB Kevin  White –    TCU

-Slot corner who is really quick and shows nice mirror ability.

ILB Taiwan Jones – Michigan State 

-Maybe a 2 down thumper, but really good run stopper and looked well at the Shrine game.

DT Ellis McCarthy – UCLA

-Big nose tackle who wasn’t a full time player at UCLA, but made an impact when he was on the field.

DT Louis Trinca-Pasat  – Iowa

-Overshadowed by teammate Carl Davis, but he’s a high energy DT who doesn’t stop till the whistle. Probably will never be a star, but a good rotational player at the next level.

WR Devin Gardner – Michigan

-Former college QB, who converted back to WR after the season. Big guy with speed and athleticism. Projection guy who will need some time to develop, but a really intriguing prospect.

CB Nick Marshall – Auburn

-Former college QB moved to defensive back at the Senior Bowl. Raw as a DB, but could be seen as a press corner or free safety prospect. Will take some development time, but he can contribute on special teams and has some potential.
