2013 NFL Draft Grades: Denver Broncos
Denver Broncos Draft Grade:
Round 1, #28 – DT Sylvester Williams, UNC – Grade: B+
-Williams fills a big need for the Broncos, but I feel this is a slight reach pick. Also given the loss of Dumervil an edge rusher may have made more sense.
Round 2, #58 – RB Montee Ball, Wisconsin – Grade: B+
-Good value pick here for the Broncos. Ball is a smart runner with good tools across the board. Their offense wasn’t as productive without Willis McGahee last year, so this will add extra insurance, and likely a future replacement.
Round 3, #90 – CB Kayvon Webster, South Florida – Grade: C-
-Corner is a need for the Broncos, but Webster is a huge reach. He probably could have been had in the 5th round, and there were far better defensive backs on the board for the Broncos.
Round 5, #146 – DE Quanterus Smith, Western Kentucky – Grade: C+
-Smith when healthy can be an effective pass rusher, but he’s coming off a big injury and is probably more of a project at this point.
Round 5, #161 – WR Tavarres King, Georgia – Grade: B-
-WR isn’t a big need, but King has value at this spot and should add some nice depth for the Broncos.
Round 6, #173 – OT Vinston Painter, Virginia Tech – Grade: C
-Though adding offensive line depth is nice, this seems like a reach pick and a guy they probably could have gotten as an undrafted free agent.
Round 7, #234 – QB Zac Dysert, Miami OH – Grade: B-
-Great value pick for the Broncos. Yes they drafted Manning’s back-up last year, but it would be smart to have multiple options for whenever Manning finally hangs them up. Dysert is a tough signal caller, who has some potential to develop.
Overall: C+
-The Broncos addressed needs, but didn’t hit any home runs with this draft class. Third round pick Kayvon Webster was a huge reach, and will likely never reach the level of a 3rd round pick. The Broncos also failed to address the need at middle linebacker, something that plagued them last season when Joe Mays went down with injury. Denver likely won’t get much value from this class this year as they try to make a Super Bowl run.
