Pros:

• Versatile TE, capable of lining up inline, in the slot, split out wide, or even in the backfield in an H-back role.
• Very good receiving tight end with natural hands
• Has really good speed and is capable of stretching the field
• Good frame that gives him an advantage against shorter defenders
• Good athlete capable of creating a lot of separation
• Has good awareness and can find holes in zone coverage
• Really nice route runner
• Comes from a very pro style offense with some excellent coaching, should be fairly NFL ready

Cons:

• Really poor overall blocker, doesn’t anchor well or show good tecnique
• Struggles as a down field or screen blocker, both from an effort stand point and technique
• His deep speed isn’t top end so in certain systems may not fit as well.
• Doesn’t come down with as many contested balls as he should, and with smaller windows at the next level he may lose some effectiveness

Overall:

Ertz has separated himself as one of the top tight ends in the draft, and could go even higher than his former Stanford teammate Coby Fleener who was the top pick in the 2nd round last year. His blocking leaves a lot to be desired, but he can fit in well for a team that wants a pass catching weapon at tight end. His Stanford pedigree should help allow him to transition to the next level quicker than some, and expect him to produce good numbers fairly quickly.
