February 16, 2012
2012 NFL Draft Scouting Report:
OT Jonathan Martin – Stanford (Junior):
Measurables:
Height: 6’6″
Weight: 304
Pros:
- Athletic tackle, capable of getting the edge against even the top pass rushers
- Really Good in pass protection
- Good run blocker, especially when asked to move in space
- Capable of getting to the 2nd level
- Good size, can handle both speed and power rushers at the college level
- A leader, good strong character guy
- Quick off the snap
Cons:
- Can struggle with NFL level power rushers
- Needs to be more consistent, got lazy at times
- Footwork needs to improve
- His anchor while good could be better
- Has to use his hands better
Analysis:
Martin is a first round talent and has the tools to be an elite left tackle in the league for the next 10 years. While the potential is there he needs to refine his craft, to reach that goal. Martin has the size and frame to fit both a zone system and a power system, but needs to work on both his footwork and strength to maximize his ability. Overall I like Martin, but I also think he has some serious risks. If you believe you can coach him up he is well worth the draft pick investment, but there is a downside as well.
