I’m fully immersed in the 2023 best ball streets and already drafting in the BBM4 tournament. But before we get too far into best ball season (what a season it is), I want to take a look back at my 2022 BBM3 Finals team.

Before last season I had just drafted a handful of best ball teams in 2020 and 2021. But in 2022, I decided to take best ball seriously and drafted approximately 50 best ball teams last summer. I mostly drafted on Underdog Fantasy with just a few drafts on DraftKings and Drafters. I had a successful season with an approximate 27% advance rate to the playoffs. The best part is one team made the BBM3 Finals on Underdog! I did not max enter the BBM3 obviously either. So I made it to the BBM3 Finals with only 9 entries in the BBM3 contest!

THE BBM3 FINALS TEAM:

As you can see from my BBM3 Finals team below, it did not have the result I hoped for in the Finals. But still placed 271st place and won $2500. Considering the tournament was 451K entries and I was in the top 300 is pretty amazing! Last year the top prize was 2 million and 2nd place was 1 million and I was one of 470 entries playing for that…quite a rush!

I had a 4-player Cowboys stack that played Thursday night of week 17 and Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott did well, but TE Dalton Schultz caught two TDs and by the end of the night my account read $1,000,000 and I was in 2nd place!

I’ve played DFS long enough to know it was too early to celebrate. But I had a huge advantage with a low-owned Schultz. Also, all my remaining players were healthy, which was rare for Finals teams last season. A lot of finals teams were decimated by late-season injuries or benchings, especially at the quarterback position. So I had every reason to believe I could have a strong finish if the rest of my roster played like they had through the playoffs.

Well, Sunday came and that did NOT happen. My running backs were solid but my other quarterbacks and wide receivers absolutely choked (or did not play – Tee Higgins). Justin Jefferson played like Van Jefferson with one catch! (Note the scores below were not what was scored on just Finals week).

TEAM STRENGTHS:

-A modified zero RB build, I like my first 3 receivers in Justin Jefferson, Tee Higgins, and Terry McLaurin.

-Good team correlation – all my quarterbacks were stacked.

-Stacking offenses I was high on! Last season, everyone was reaching and paying up for the Eagles and Giants actually, so I just drafted Miles Sanders from the Eagles. Then I stacked up the Cowboys and Commanders for value. The NFC East had the easiest strength of schedule last year.

I know the Hurts and the Eagles’ passing game was elite. But obviously Hurts teams were in trouble on Underdog since he was injured during the best ball playoffs.

I also got value, late-round pieces from the Chiefs and Dolphins. We discussed on the Fanspeak Network or in articles about the key to stacking up good offenses or offenses that are undervalued.

-While not forced, I actually had week 17 correlation with some late-round picks in Vikings/Randall Cobb and Washington/David Njoku.

-Drafting 3 QBs. It is an unpopular opinion to draft 3 QBs. But with Prescott’s injury and being out 5 weeks, I can say 100% that I would not have even made the PLAYOFFS, without having 2 other QBs while he was injured.

I do believe if you draft a “hero QB” or elite QB, you can just draft 2 QBs on Underdog, but I think there are a lot of merits to taking that 3rd late-round flier QB to protect your lineup. Perhaps if you deal with an injury, you could get a lower-owned QB through to the playoffs which could be a powerful weapon. Carson Wentz ended up getting benched, but he gave me 3 very usable weeks that I needed to make playoffs.

TEAM WEAKNESSES:

-Washington didn’t end up being as big of a breakout offense as I hoped in real-life or fantasy. So double stacking wasn’t the answer there. But both Washington receivers actually did well in the playoffs to help me make the Finals. When looking for unvalued offenses, make sure you have a good feel for how their weapons will be used. Washington ended up being very run-heavy.

-Obviously missed on some late-round picks in Mike Gesicki and Chosen (formerly Robbie) Anderson. I was bullish on the Panthers being an undervalued offense and thought Anderson was great value, but he was a flop.

CONCLUSION:

I believe having good team stacks and focusing on stacking or getting access to either good teams or undervalued teams was a key to my BBM3 Finals appearance. I will be analyzing tons of different best ball strategies all summer long, so be sure to keep checking for new best ball content here.

Having a strong advance rate to the playoffs and a BBM3 Finals appearance officially got me hooked on NFL best ball. There’s no turning back now! I believe NFL best ball is where DFS was in 2014-2016, and there are still edges to be had in a very new format. I will be aggressively playing this season and hope to have more Finals teams this year across multiple sites! So stay tuned to all our great best ball content and we can meet in this year’s best ball Finals!
