Waiver Wire Pickups for Week Nine

Fantasy Football Waiver Wire

It is looking like the Jaguars have found a quality running back. It just is not Toby Gerhart like we all expected.

Denard Robinson

Denard Robinson rushed for over 100 yards for the second week in a row. What is most appealing about this is that Toby Gerhart was active this weekend. This shows that the Jaguars have officially handed the number one running back job over to Robinson. Whenever a player is handed the starting position, he is sure to go fast on the waiver wire. Fantasy owners can expect him to be the main guy for the remainder of the season unless something terribly unexpected happens.

 Brandon LaFell

How many games will fantasy owners allow Brandon LaFell to hang out in free agency? LaFell is still only owned in about 15 percent of leagues. He and Tom Brady have shown a lot of chemistry over the past few weeks. It looks like he has even surpassed Julian Edelman as the Patriots’ go-to wide receiver. Though he just recorded his first 100 yard game, he has five touchdowns on the season. His ability to find the end zone really makes him a great weapon in fantasy football. After the week he had, he may finally start seeing some respect from the fantasy community.

Kyle Orton

Kyle Orton is one quarterback to start watching. He had a monster game last weekend; throwing for four touchdowns. That marks his third week in a row with at least two touchdown passes. Last year we saw a huge push for Alex Smith because of his ability to never let down a fantasy owner. So far this is what we have been seeing from Orton. The Bills have a bye this weekend, but following a week ten matchup at Kansas City, he will have four very reasonable matchups. This includes another game against the Jets. Those owners who have quarterbacks with bye weeks in the upcoming weeks may want to consider picking up the Bills’ quarterback.

Martavis Bryant is starting to come alive. The Steelers expect a lot out of him and he is starting to show some potential.

Martavis Bryant

Martavis Bryant was a deep sleeper in the offseason. The Steelers’ rookie wide receiver caught the eyes of some fantasy owners due to his huge physical stature. He has finally started showing up on the stat charts. In his first game he caught two passes and scored a touchdown. Then last weekend he broke out for 83 yards and two touchdowns on five catches. Roethlisberger is probably starting to see the real potential of this kid. Bryant is still a sleeper for the remainder of the season until he can match his production from week eight. At this point, it looks like that could very well happen.

 Gavin Escobar

It is starting to look like Gavin Escobar, not Jason Witten, is the tight end to own in fantasy leagues from the Cowboys. Make no mistake; Witten is still one of the very best tight ends in the game. However, he has started to become more of the classic blocking tight end in the late years of his career. Escobar caught two touchdowns last weekend, bringing him up to three total scores on the season. He is a tough player to start at this point because Witten is still taking opportunities away from him. However, the tight end market is getting very thin. Fantasy owners in deeper leagues should definitely be concern about this. With bye weeks and the possibilities of injuries, Escobar could develop into a handy solution for some problems that could arise later in the season. Remember, tight end is one of the most physically demanding positions on a fantasy football team’s roster. It is never surprising when one goes down.
