Continuing to build their coaching staff, the Baltimore Ravens have hired former University of Wisconsin running backs coach Thomas Hammock to the same position.

With the Badgers, Hammock was also the assistant head coach and a key recruiter––today is actually National Signing Day for recruits.

He takes over for Wilbert Montgomery who had been the running backs coach since 2008. When the season finished, the team parted ways with him and he has since become the running backs coach of the Cleveland Browns.

Throughout Hammock’s time in football, he has been involved with running backs. He played running back at Northern Illinois until a heart condition ended his playing days. At Northern Illinois, one of his teammates was Michael Turner who played nine seasons in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers and Atlanta Falcons, rushing for 7,338 career yards.

After he had to stop playing football, he became a coach. He started out as a graduate assistant at Wisconsin from 2003-2004. Northern Illinois then brought him in to be their running backs coach from 2005-2006. From 2007-2010, he was the running backs coach at the University of Minnesota and in his last season there, he was also the co-offensive coordinator. Since then, he has been the running backs coach with the Badgers.

During his time with the Badgers, the 32-year old has been part of one of the best rushing attacks in the nation. He has helped develop running backs Montee BallJames White and Melvin Gordon. Ball was a second-round pick of the Denver Broncos in last year’s draft, White is in the draft this year and Gordon is currently one of the best running backs in college.

While at Wisconsin, the Badgers ranked third in the NCAA in rushing yards per attempt (5.7 yards), fourth in rushing touchdowns (121) and seventh overall in rushing (251.1 yards per game).

The addition of Hammock continues to overhaul of the Ravens’ offensive coaching staff. They now have new coaches at offensive coordinator (Gary Kubiak), quarterbacks coach (Rick Dennison), tight ends coach (Brian Pariani) and offensive line coach (Juan Castillo). The position of wide receivers coach still needs to be filled. This is the only vacancy left on the Ravens coaching staff.
