Ravens Sign QB Caleb Hanie

Earlier today, the Ravens made what will probably be their last free agent signing before the start of the 2013 NFL Draft which starts on April 25th.

That move was signing backup quarterback Caleb Hanie to a one year deal worth the veteran minimum.

The Baltimore Ravens have signed backup QB Caleb Hanie.

Hanie, 27, went undrafted in the 2008 NFL Draft and was signed by the Bears.  He was able to make their 53-man roster and played in three games that season.  In 2010 he played in two games and had to play in the NFC Championship game against the Packers due to injuries to the Bears top two quarterbacks.  While the Bears lost 21-14 in this game, Hanie went 13-of-20 for 153 yards, 1 TD, and 2 INTs (one returned for a touchdown).

In the 2010 season, Hanie, had the most action of his career as he played in six games and went 51-of-102 for 613 yards with 3 TDs and 9 INTs.

Last offseason, Hanie signed with the Denver Broncos but never played in a game.

For the Ravens, Hanie will battle with Tyrod Taylor for the backup quarterback job.  Over the last two seasons, the Ravens haven’t kept a third quarterback on the 53-man roster so the loser of this battle could get cut.  However, when asked about Hanie, head coach John Harbaugh said “He is a talented guy” and the team is open to keeping three quarterbacks on the roster.

So, if Hanie impresses in training camp and preseason, he has a chance to make the roster though, my guess is the Ravens will only go with two quarterbacks again this year.  With that being said, I don’t see the Ravens parting ways with Taylor as he is a young quarterback who they only drafted two years ago.
