OVERALL LINEUP STRATEGY FOR WEEK 1 AND SUMMARY:

STEVE:

For me it’s simple. I want to pay up for the big studs from the Chiefs/Chargers, Bills, Ravens/Lions, Seahawks, and Rams, and then fill in with value as needed. Not looking to get too cute with all the backup QBs and odd situations on the slate. I don’t think it will take much to get contrarian as you only need to pivot off one chalky cheap play or expensive stack and you will find yourself fairly unique.

I think one interesting game I’m going to target more is the Washington/Giants game. I know the Giants don’t have an offensive line, but Washington’s defense makes every QB look like a Pro Bowler. It will likely be Tyrod Taylor again, and whether you play him or not, Waller, Slayton, Robinson, and maybe even Hyatt should all be in play vs this awful secondary.

While the Giants defense did hold the Bills last week, Buffalo was coming off an international trip. I’m not sure this defense will be able to do that again. When Washington’s offense is pushed, they produce quite well, and against a young inexperienced secondary I could see Sam Howell and these Washington receivers doing well also. McLaurin and Samuel will get most of the ownership, but Jahan Dotson could be in line for a breakout and might be under 1% owned.

MEG:

I agree with Steve that it is clear what games to target and not looking to get cute with backup QBs. As he mentioned there is enough value and contrarian plays that I like, and I’m not going to stress out about playing chalky guys like Cooper Kupp or Kenneth Walker.

What I am struggling with is how much to play the stud/high-priced QBs in these top games. If like in some recent weeks in this lower-scoring season, the high-price QBs are average and a lower-price QB is better points/dollar, then that is the better path. I would not be surprised to see any or all of Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and Justin Herbert put up a huge game. But I also wouldn’t be shocked if they had average games relative to their price. And that’s what I’m struggling to decide right now.

The one I like the most is Mahomes after a long week vs. this Chargers defense. That has flipped for me, as I was originally more interested in Herbert likely playing from behind. I may not play as many of these stud QBs on the main slate, and hedge with them on early-only and afternoon-only slates.

I really like both Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford even though neither offers anything on the ground. But I think with their top RB out this week, they may throw at a much higher rate and the passing game will be an extension of their running game. I also like Steve’s call in the Washington/NY Giants game that either QB stack could work well given their price and respective matchup.
