Winx and Cracksman – The world’s best

It has been another stellar flat season across the world with a number of star performances to note over 2018. Next up it is the Breeders’ cup, in which some of the top rated horses will be travelling over for the showpiece event. Two who certainly won’t be travelling over but are leading the way in the rankings are champions Winx and Cracksman. Here we cover the careers of both of these stars of the sport.

Winx

Where to start with the wonder mare from down under. She really is a legend of the sport and has now won 29 races in succession! A stunning return of class and consistency. Winx is now coming off the back of winning her record breaking fourth cox plate, a feat that is likely to never be equaled again.

Trained by master trainer Chris Waller, Winx has now won 33 of her 39 starts to date, with her last defeat coming back in April of 2015. The great mare has now pushed her best RPR to 130, which all but cements her as a modern day great despite calls that she has yet to race against a top notcher. Retirement could now be next for her but she will leave a legacy for many years to come.

Cracksman

The four-year has now retired but had always had a tall reputation being the son of the great, Frankel. Trained by a master in John Gosden the horse finished third in the Derby on just his third start, in which experience clearly was the reason behind his defeat. Following this he went from strength to strength resulting in a breath taking victory in the Champions Stakes in 2017. Cracksman had now won five of his seven races to date.

Huge things were then expected of the horse entering the 2018 season with the Arc muted as the big target. Unfortunately this wasn’t to be as conditions went against the horse, as stable mate Enable landed her second Arc in succession. He won his first two starts of the season but only scraped home in the Coronation against a weak field. Cracksman then again followed this up running below par in finishing second in the Prince of Wales stakes at Royal Ascot. At the time it seemed he could be losing his interest in the game but wow were we wrong. The ground had been a big problem with the hot weather throughout the year resulting in fast conditions. So when returned to his likened soft ground it was a different story.

Cracksman’s final start of his career was a defence of his crown in the Champions stakes on British Champions day. This would be his career best to date, as he destroyed a field full of talented horses, including the ever-reliable Crystal Ocean who finished a distant second. This performance all but cemented the horse as the world’s best, and it still remains that we may still not have seen the best of Cracksman. He still goes down as a legend with an RPR high of 131.
