Odds for NFL MVP
High possibility guy – Carson Wentz +850
A lot depends on if he is ready to go week one but he was well on his way to winning last season before the knee injury. You could argue there was enough unbelievable play he should have got more consideration. The Eagles should be good and I like Wentz over regulars like Brady and Rodgers who are worse odds.
2nd level guy – Philip Rivers +2500
I am really buying into the Los Angeles Chargers this season. And why not their Pro Bowl level quarterback? The Chargers offense in year two with Anthony Lynn should make solid strides. Losing Hunter Henry already hurts but Mike Williams should make up some of that difference. The Chargers should be a playoff team and Rivers as MVP would be a great story.
Longshot guy – Dalvin Cook +12500
Cook showed great signs before getting hurt a year ago. Like Wentz we will have to see if he comes back fully by week one. But these odds are crazy for a starting explosive back on a team that should have a great offense. I could see Cook doing a lot of what Todd Gurley did with the Rams just a season ago.
Don’t like what Vegas likes – Jimmy Garoppolo +1500
Jimmy G is the 5th highest favorite by Vegas. I found this crazy but maybe its Vegas thinking they can fool some people into being Jimmy G believers. He could be good especially with Shanahan but I think it’s too soon.
Obviously Aaron Rodgers is the clear favorite. And you have to like that with his offensive line getting healthy again. Tom Brady will always be another favorite until age finally catches up with him.
Skilled bettors recommend you only bet on quarterbacks for MVP. Why? Because since 2001, other skill positions have barely been in consideration. Only three running backs won MVP – Shaun Alexander in 2005, LaDainian Tomlinson in 2006 and Adrian Peterson in 2012.
Would a wide receiver ever be considered? You’d have to like a player like Antonio Brown or Julio Jones if their touchdowns were record setting and helped lead a team to the Super Bowl, right? But again, it seems like besides a few running backs, the MVP trend is focused on the quarterback position. So who do you like for MVP this season?
