The Cost of a Ticket – The Most Expensive Finals Ever

Soccer Steve O Speak

The World Cup 2018 Final is set to be held next Sunday in Moscow, in what will be the most watched sporting event on the planet. Despite being the most popular and watched event in the world, it is only the 12th most expensive sporting event in history (Germany Vs Argentina, 2014). Here are the record-breaking ticket prices in sport that have eclipsed the World Cup:

Chicago Cubs Vs Cleveland Indians (2016 MLB World Series)

For those outside the USA, it might be quite baffling to know that the most expensive ticket in sporting history was purchased for a baseball match! Unbelievably, one ticket was sold for $1.17m for a standing room seat, where you could be as close to the action as possible. The Chicago Cubs went on to win the World Series for the first time since 1908.

Floyd Mayweather Vs Manny Pacquiao (2015)

The much anticipated fight between Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao finally took place in 2015, in what turned out to be a huge letdown in terms of entertainment. Mayweather ended up winning the bout on points, but perhaps the biggest eyeopener of the event was the whopping $600m it made in grossing, not to mention the $141,000 tickets!

Andy Murray Vs Novak Djokovic (2013 Wimbledon Final)

2013 was a historic year for tennis, as Andy Murray finally ended a 77-year wait for a British Wimbledon champion. Murray was up against Novak Djokovic, who at the time, was playing some of the best tennis around but the Scotsman managed to overcome the Serbian in a gruelling match, that was hit by record-high temperatures. Some tickets were sold for nearly $120,000, while booking fees alone cost up to $15,000!

Canada Vs USA (2010 Men’s Hockey Final)

The 2010 Men’s Hockey Final at the Vancouver Olympics between Canada and USA was the most sought after ticket in Canadian sporting history. Canadians from all over the country were so desperate to see their team get one over on their bitter rivals, that some were willing to pay around $100,000 for a ticket! Canada took home the Gold medal on the day, as Sidney Crosby scored the winning goal just 7 minutes into overtime.

The World Cup 2018 in Russia is set to be the most watched event on the globe and it’s not hard to see why as it will feature some of the best players on the planet such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar Jr. All 3 players will be hoping to win their first World Cup, while there is a new generation of young starlets who will be hoping for the same. We have taken a look at some of the most promising young players on Football Weeks that are set to feature for their countries in Russia.
