Why the New England Patriots Win the 2018 NFL Super Bowl
It’s March and I’m sure most of you are filling in your brackets for March Madness.
However, NFL free agency has started too and teams have been trying to fill holes before the NFL draft. Despite just winning the 2017 NFL Super Bowl, the New England Patriots have been very active in free agency.
The Patriots have already signed several players that will play key roles next season.
Lawrence Guy signed a 4-year contract worth up to $20 million. The DT is turning 27-years-old this week and while he isn’t likely to pile up many sacks, he was rated in the top 25 run defenders last year according to Pro Football Focus.
While some don’t people may not agree, the Patriots fleeced the Saints last week. Brandin Cooks and the #118 pick was sent to the Patriots and in return the Saints received the #32 and #103 picks in this year’s draft.
The Saints basically traded Cooks for the #32 pick, which doesn’t make much sense. Cooks is a proven deep threat WR in the league. Sure, the Saints want to draft defense, but losing Cooks for so little isn’t the way to go about things.
New England also picked up Kony Ealy in a trade with the Panthers. The Patriots sent pick #64 to Carolina for Ealy and pick #72. They grab a solid pass rusher in a contract year and only move down eight spots in the draft.
In the biggest splash, the Patriots signed Stephon Gilmore to a 5-year deal worth $65 million ($40 million GTD). NE are familiar with Gilmore as he played his first five season in Buffalo for the Bills.
Dwayne Allen was also traded to the Patriots along with a 6th round pick for NE’s 4th round pick. The Patriots normally aren’t this busy during free agency, but it’s clear the organization wants to win now.
Tom Brady could be retiring within the next two or three years. Bill Belichick wants to compete for Super Bowls every season, but this year’s team could end up being the best team the Patriots have ever had.
Rob Gronkowski will need to stay healthy, but if he can, then him and Allen will destroy defenses up the middle. Cooks will be able to stretch the field unlike any other WR on the Patriots since Randy Moss.
The Patriots still have a lot of picks in this year’s draft too and you can bet they’ll add some defensive depth. NE are already paying under 4/1 odds to win the 2018 NFL Super Bowl and that number is trending down.
You’re not going to get better odds than 4/1 on NE winning the Super Bowl unless they get off to a bad start once the regular season starts, which is unlikely, as they’re fielding a team full of game changers.
