Redskins Weekly: Giants Recap & Dallas Week
1- I talked about the win over the Giants a bit on Monday and I have some more to add.
The defense did come to play on Sunday and were possibly one play away from a shutout if they stopped the 4th and long touchdown pass to Randle. Instead they made it interesting and got some help from the offense in the end with a couple first downs and the ability to move field position. Although the stat line won’t show it I was really impressed by how they went up against Odell Beckham, Jr. I am no longer hesitant to call him the best offensive weapon in the division over Dez Bryant. The difference being you can get physical and in the head of Beckham but he doesn’t usually wilt like Bryant can. Beckham versus Josh Norman coming up should be a battle. The Skins secondary ran and battled Beckham all day and it took a crazy catch for him to get on the board.
2- Usually at this point of the season we are talking next season’s free agency and draft but we can actually talk of a playoff race.
So what am I going to talk about? Of course, free agency. By releasing both Robert Griffin and Dashon Goldson from their current deals the Redskins will clear up a lot of space and once again be players if they choose. Griffin will move on but Goldson could come back now that he is a player’s only meeting legend. But at a much friendlier price. If Kirk Cousins is back he should take up some of the space on a new deal. We won’t touch on the franchise tag implications just yet because that would be a huge hit.
I think the true question comes with the team’s top two paid wide receivers in DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon. Garcon has a $10+ million hit and I doubt he gets that. Hopefully they can work something out which benefits both in the end. But that hit is just too high for a guy who isn’t as explosive as we saw 2012 Week one in New Orleans. As for Jackson I really waver on this one. But I think the team has to make a tough call here because Jackson isn’t stupid and has a history of looking to redo deals especially going into a final year. He hasn’t played much but recently he has shown what he can bring when healthy. The team can carry his hit but a lot depends on how DeSean plays it out I imagine.
3- As for the Monday Night game versus the Cowboys.
Washington is awful in prime time and Dallas is awful without Tony Romo. Matt Cassel has not been the savior Jerry Jones hoped for when he dumped Weeded for him a month or so back. Weeden was a better option but Jerry didn’t think so. And Jerry has proven this season to be a straight up idiot. Like Manning to Beckham, Romo to Bryant struck fear in Skins fans but now it is Cassel to Bryant. Will Bryant compete on Monday night after another rough go versus Carolina? I know that Breeland and D. Hall will be ready to nag him all night. Dallas still feels they are in this race so it would be a good time to knock them out for good. So I feel it is gonna be Redskins 23-13.
