Redskins Weekly Thoughts Heading into February

1. Raheem Morris is gone and Perry Fewell is in.

I think I like this move mainly because the secondary hasn’t worked the past few seasons.  Fewell struggled in the end in New York before being fired but now he can concentrate on making the Redskins young corners better.  Something Morris didn’t do with a guy like David Amerson.  Still far from confident overall with the hiring of Joe Barry but having a guy like Fewell also on the staff should help.  But then again Buddy Ryan, Bill Belichick and Tony Dungy could be the coaches and if the talent doesn’t get better it won’t matter.

2. I heard the Robert Griffin interview that Chris Russell was able to get on Thursday.     

Solid grab by Russell but first of all the audio from the phone interview was horrible.  I wonder if Griffin was talking from a cave in Tora Bora.  I don’t think much of it other than it is the same things we always hear from Griffin.  It was good to hear that he is excited to work with new QB coach Matt Cavanaugh.  Question is will he ever?  I still think there is a solid chance Griffin never takes a snap in Richmond.

3. Speaking of the quarterbacks is Kirk Cousins suddenly a forgotten man in DC?

I only bring it up again because of something I heard on the radio also.  Dick Vermeil told Kevin Sheehan that he really like Cousins as a quarterback.  So do I still.  And I don’t understand why he is a lost cause it seems like.  I think many look way too much into the 2nd half of the Giants game and the 1st of the Titans game.  How about the other quarters he played this season when the offense was by far at its best.  I think a coach like Dick Vermeil has the credibility to where Gruden should listen.  In the end, it could come down to GM Scot anyway who he hands to Gruden.

4. Should the Redskins trade their pick to the Eagles to allow them to draft Marcus Mariota?

Right now he could be there at 5 or could drop if teams get cold feet.  Have to think the Jets at six are interested so the Eagles, if Chip Kelly wants him, would have to move up into the top five.  For the Eagles to move up to 5 they would have to give Washington a decent package.  It is a long way away but I am pretty confident the Redskins would take the risk and the picks.  Their lack of talent and McCloughan’s insistence on using the draft make it must to build with multiple picks.  I think the main concern would be the Eagles going higher if another team looks to move to 2-4 to ensure drafting Mariota.

5. I never picked a MVP for the 2014 Washington Redskins even though maybe they don’t deserve one.

Picking up DeSean Jackson was a solid move and at times he looked uncoverable as he made big plays.  But how great he was at times he wasn’t consistent enough for me to win the award.  Trent Williams made the Pro Bowl and played injured way too much this season but I don’t feel he was the best player on the team.  Tress Way was awesome but I can’t pick a punter unless they average over 60 yards a kick.

I am going with Ryan Kerrigan.  It just seemed like he showed up pretty much for every game.  He should have made the Pro Bowl but didn’t.  He is flat out better than Tamba Hali.  Now we just need 10 more Kerrigan’s to change the defense.
