Overview:
So where do the Redskins stand in relation to the cap? Well it’s unclear exactly what the cap will be in 2014, but it is expected to be under $130 million and likely under $128 million. This gives the Redskins a good $25 million in cap space and that is before the voiding of contracts of Brandon Meriweather, London Fletcher and Josh Morgan, and of course any other cuts they may make. I’ll go into the voided deals and cuts in another post, but as it stands now the Redskins are in a solid position towards the 2014 cap. They do need to clearly add some talent as they are very thin at wide receiver, linebacker, cornerback and safety.
The Redskins do need to consider re-signing guys like Brian Orakpo, Perry Riley and Santana Moss, which will eat a chunk of their cap, but they should still have some money left over to sign a couple good free agents to bolster their roster. How many and how much they can spend will probably be determined by their roster cuts and of course which young players could step up this year.
