Players the Redskins should consider trying to sign to their practice squad:

Now obviously most if not all of the Redskins practice squad will be made up of players that were on the Redskins 90 man roster, but there were some interesting cuts these past few days. Here is a list of guys that the Redskins should consider kicking the tires on and offering a practice squad spot to. (this assumes all these players clear waivers):

QB Matt Scott-

-A mobile read-option QB, if Scott was on the practice squad there would be zero reason to have Pat White on the active roster, as Scott could be the guy to simulate mobile quarterbacks.

S Robert Lester-

-Lester lacks great fluidity and speed, but he’s got very good instincts and early in Panthers OTA’s and mini-camp impressed. He’ll probably never be a starter, but could be a nice back-up. Good depth guy to have on the practice squad.

DL Everrett Dawkins-

-Dawkins isn’t a perfect fit for a 5 technique spot, but he’s a young active defensive lineman, who adds some intriguing depth.

WR Russell Shepard-

-Shepard early on was the star of the Eagles camp, and it looked like he was maybe going to make it. He’d be an interesting developmental receiver, and of course he would give an interesting look behind the curtain of Chip Kelly’s offense.

LB Chris McCoy-

-McCoy was a surprising cut by the Eagles after having a very strong camp/preseason. He’s more of an outside backer which the Redskins don’t exactly need, but he also could help give some insight into the Eagles defensive philosophy.

WR Chris Harper-

-Harper was a 4th round pick out of K-State, and he very well could end up getting claimed. If he doesn’t though he’s a very interesting developmental receiver. He’s a bit raw, but he’s got nice speed and a really good frame.

S Rashard Hall-

-Hall is a young interesting safety, he has a little upside and given how thin the Redskins are here he could be a good option for depth.

TE Matt Furstenburg-

-Tight end isn’t exactly a position of need, but Furstenburg has some real promise to develop into a solid pass catching tight end. He’ll probably just accept the Ravens practice squad offer, but it would be worth kicking the tires on him.

LB Keith Pough-

-Pough isn’t the biggest or most athletically gifted linebacker, but you might be hard pressed to find a smarter or harder worker linebacker. He is a true student of the game, and reminds me a lot of London Fletcher. He played at Howard (though from SC) so he’s familiar with the area and may be happy to come back.

WR Cobi Hamilton-

-Hamilton as the Razorbacks leading receiver last year, and played and succeeded at the highest level in college football. He’s got solid speed and size and could be worth a flier on.

OL Reid Fragel-

-Fragel only has one year of offensive line experience, but in that year he showed plenty of potential. He’s a raw prospect, but he’s got great measurables and is definitely worth a flier on. (maybe worth claiming as well, given his potential)

C/G Phillip Blake-

-I’m not 100% sure he’s practice squad eligible, but I don’t believe he was active for enough games last season. Blake was RGIII’s college center and given that there is no natural back-up center on this roster, it might be nice to have someone on the practice squad.

WR Tavarres King-

-King is a surprise cut as most people thought he would make the Broncos roster. Similar to Hamilton, King succeeded at the SEC level and has some solid potential.

DL Lawrence Guy-

-I’m not 100% sure Guy is PS eligible, but he’s a young promising 5 technique lineman. If the Redskins could get him on the PS, he could give them solid depth.

DL A.J. Francis-

-Francis isn’t going to wow you with numbers, but he’s a local guy who could be a back-up 5 tech. He’s got nice size and could be worth a one year flier.

WR Conner Vernon-

-Vernon is a pure slot receiver, who’s a nice route runner and has reliable hands. Given that Santana Moss is the only receiver really capable as a slot receiver on this roster having a back-up on the practice squad makes some sense.

CB/S Terry Hawthorne-

-I was never too high on Hawthorne, but he’s a long corner with some decent size and could even perhaps be considered for free safety depth as well. He’s got good natural speed and a little potential.
