Final Practice Squad Predictions for the Redskins
RB Jawan Jamison:
-Jamison projects to be the only drafted rookie to not make the team, but he had little chance with Thompson staying healthy enough to showcase his big play ability and Evan Royster and Keiland Williams both having strong camps/preseasons. Jamison did look good in the 4th preseason game for the Redskins, and would be a guy guy to keep around. Even if the Redskins keep 4 RB’s (like I currently project) there is a good chance they will need a 5th at some point this season. For at least the last 4 seasons the Redskins have needed 5 running backs on their active game day rosters to get through the course of the season.
WR Lance Lewis:
-Lewis had another strong camp/preseason, but loses out in the numbers game. Lewis is also a guy who is likely able to sneak through waivers and has one more year of practice squad eligibility. He showed both nice catching ability and special teams work, and he’s a guy who the Redskins could promote later in the year if some other team comes looking for him.
WR Nick Williams:
-Nick Williams really picked it up as the preseason wore on, with a number of nice catches and some nice returns. He really never had a shot at the 53 man roster, but with a practice squad spot he could get into the mix for next season. Williams has some solid slot receiver potential which is a position that the Redskins currently lack depth behind starter Santana Moss.
OL Xaiver Nixon:
-Nixon started off camp with more hype than substance, and while at times he flashed he’s clearly got a ways to go. Nixon though would be a good addition to the practice squad and hopefully he can eventually develop into a capable back-up or perhaps even a quality starter.
LB William Compton:
-Compton has sealed a practice squad spot (assuming he doesn’t get claimed, which is doubtful), with a very strong camp/preseason. He’s another guy who could be promoted to the active roster later in this year, to replace an injury or just to keep him from going somewhere else. With the Redskins top 4 ILB’s all UFA’s next season, the Redskins would love to have one replacement develop internally.
S Jose Gumbs:
-Gumbs really played solid in the final couple preseason games and has probably earned himself a practice squad spot. Given the concerns around the play of Jordan Pugh and DeJon Gomes and injuries with Brandon Meriweather there is a solid chance that Gumbs will be needed on the 53 man roster at some point.
2 Open Spots:
-This would leave the Redskins with two open spots on their practice squad that would need to be filled from the outside. I considered DE Dominique Hamilton since he was on the PS last year, and would give them depth at a understaffed position, but he didn’t do much in the preseason. LB Marvin Burdette had some hype coming in, but I don’t think he’s earned a PS spot either. Tight end Emmanuel Ogbuehi opened a couple of eyes this preseason/camp, but it’s not exactly a position where the Redskins need depth. With the two open spots I’d like to see them grab a defensive lineman and a defensive back.
