‘Freakish’ Jedrick Wills of Alabama out to prove he’s top OT

Jedrick Wills is already in the conversation for best offensive tackle in the 2020 NFL draft.

The 6-foot-5, 315-pound Alabama junior wants to end that conversation at the upcoming Scouting Combine.

“I want to put out freakish numbers for O-linemen at every single station,” Wills said in an interview with Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Wills is training at APEC (Athlete Performance Enhancement Center) in Fort Worth.

The draft is considered top-heavy with quality offensive tackles, including Georgia’s Andrew Thomas, Houston’s Josh Jones, Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs and Louisville’s Mekhi Becton, among others.

But many draft analysts already list Wills as the top tackle follwing a career in which he gave up just one sack in 29 starts. Nonetheless, Wills wants to separate himself from the pack with his work at the Combine, which will be held Feb. 23-March 2. He told the Star-Telegram that he’s hoping to run the 40 in the 4.8-second range. To put that into perspective, former Texas A&M center Erik McCoy’s 4.89 second 40 time was the fastest of any offensive lineman last year.

“From a physical standpoint as a tackle, he moves better than any tight end that I’ve worked with from a standpoint of mechanics and flexibility and mobility,” APEC founder and president Bobby Stroupe said, via the Star-Telegram. “He can access angles that a lot of our skill guys can’t.

“He’s got incredible levels of power for his size at 315 pounds. I fully expect him to be a cornerstone player in the NFL for many years.”
