Baltimore Ravens Roster Moves

Baltimore Ravens

Today was the day when all NFL teams must get their rosters down from 90 players to 75 players.  Here is a recap of the Ravens moves today.

Cuts:
K Billy Cundiff
C Cecil Newton
CB Jordan Mabin
LS Patrick Scales
QB Chester Stewart
WR Patrick Williams
TE Davon Drew
WR Devin Goda
OL Addison Lawrence

Cut Analysis
The news about Billy Cundiff came out yesterday and has already been discussed.  After the game against the Jaguars this seemed like a strong reality.  Newton is known as the older brother of Cam Newton but nothing else.  The only other player on this list that had a real shot at making the roster was TE Davon Drew who was drafted in the 5th round in 2009.  With Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta out he had a chance but the Ravens instead signed Billy Bajema and gave him all the opportunities.

Injured Reserve
LB Stevie Baggs
LB Darryl Blackstock
S Emanuel Cook
DT Ryan McBean

Injured Reserve Analysis
Baggs was only signed a few weeks ago and never really played for the Ravens.  His injury is an unknown so he will be a strong candidate for an injury settlement.  Blackstock was also signed a few weeks and never played either due to his ankle injury.  Blackstock is also a injury settlement option as he won’t be in the long term plans of the Ravens and probably isn’t injured to seriously.  It is no surprise that Cook and McBean are on injured reserve as Cook broke his leg and McBean broke his ankle.  These are two injuries that take a while to recover from.  Both players were expected to make the roster, Cook as a special teamer and McBean as depth on the defensive line.

Physically Unable to Preform List
OLB Terrell Suggs
WR David Reed

Physically Unable to Preform List Analysis
Being placed on the PUP list means the player can start practicing starting in week 6.  After this they have 3 weeks to be placed on the active roster, injured reserve or be waived.  No surprises here as the earliest Suggs will come back is November which is well after week 6.  The Ravens will likely place Suggs on the active roster after the 3 weeks and he will just be listed as out on the injury report until he is ready to play.  David Reed tore his ACL in December of last year and due to this he hasn’t been able to practice yet.  If Reed was healthy I don’t think he would make the roster over Deonte Thompson and Tommy Streeter.  Therefor, Reed will probably be placed on IR or just released after week 6.
